1935 (16 Aug) airmail cover from Adelaide addressed to Pilot Officer Burt c/o R.A.A.F. Flying Boat Daru off Thursday Island. In July 1935 an RAAF Southampton flying boat made several flights to survey the west coast of the York Peninsula for a possible Karumba-Cairns route. Sqd-Ldr Hermpill and P/O Burt were tasked to search for missing Captain Stuart Campbell (ex-RAAF) in a Short Scion aeroplane on the Fly River, Papua. Departed Karumba and flew to Thursday Is and then on to Daru Is, Papua. On 27 July Campbell was located at the Madiri Plantation on the Fly River. The Southampton landed to determine Campbell's status then returned to Daru. After landing at Daru it was discovered that the hull of the flying boat had been damaged by coral when landing and required repair and the port engine had a serious defect. A new engine was called for but it was not until five weeks later that the engine arrived at Daru and repairs effected. See subsequent flight AAMC 524 |
