    AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, NEW SOUTH WALES, LAUREATES

    Lot 60

    1d Laureate (Bluish Medium Wove Paper) Carmine [15, variety 'two leaves right of SOUTH'] clear to small margins cancelled '64' of Maitland, Scarlet [9, variety 'WALE'] close to large margins (showing portion of adjoining unit at base), cancelled '40' of Bombala, vertical pair [5/15, latter variety 'two leaves right of 'SOUTH'] close but clear margins all round except just touched at top, cancelled '55' (Newcastle). Brick-red [7, variety no leaves right of 'SOUTH'] (2 - one clear to small margins all round, the other small margins three sides, both cancelled Sydney obliterator) and horizontal pair (unplated) clear to small margins cancelled indistinct numeral. SG 45b/46/46b/46c/48/48a Cat £2365+ (8)

     

    Lot 61
    Estimate: $2,500

    1d Laureate various shades and printings on unwmkd paper, complete reconstruction of the engraved plate of 50 with additional examples of [12], [23], [30] and [37]. The reconstruction includes 20 pairs, a strip of 3, an L-shaped block of 3 and a strip of four and incorporates the major engraving errors on Nos. [7], [9] and [21] plus extra stamps comprising a single [7] and pair [14-15] on Yellowish Wove, four singles [15], [9], [7] (2), a vertical pair [5/15] and two horizontal unplated pairs on bluish wove and unplated singles (11, in various shades) on either hard bluish or hard yellowish paper and an 1852 (27 Mar) cover bearing two singles. The condition is far superior to that usually seen and many four-margin stamps are included. (74 plus 1 cover)

      

    Lot 62
    Estimate: $2,750

    2d Laureate Plate II early and worn impressions, reconstruction of the engraved plate of 50. The condition is far better than that usually seen with the large majority of stamps fine four-margin examples, with all printings represented, [23] being variety 'WAEES' and [42] showing small portion of imprint plus an unused (defective) example [42], and a used selection of early and worn Impressions on both bluish and white wove papers (47 incl two strips of three and a pair). Majority also fine (98 + 1 cover)

        

    Lot 63

    2d Laureate Plate II selection on both bluish and white wove papers, all hand-picked examples with full margins and a very fine group, incl examples cancelled '87' (Ipswich) and 95 (Brisbane), Prussian Blue [3, variety 'WALES' partly covered with wavy lines] (2 - both showing complete frameline at right and one each on the bluish wove and thick white papers) plus a horizontal strip of three [42-44] large margins three sides showing complete framelines cancelled heavy indistinct numerals. SG 63/63a/64/64a Cat £2180+ (26)

    Estimate: $150 Realised Price : $160

    2d Prussian Blue Laureate Plate III, four large margins and small traces of gum. The paper slightly discoloured and lower left hand corner crease in the margin though still very scarce. Cat £750

     

    Lot 65
    Estimate: $1,200

    3d Laureate selection comprising various shades on medium greyish-blue paper (8) and Thick Blue Wove Paper (3), all selected copies in much finer condition than is typically seen for stamps from this close-set plate, plus a range of the 6d Grey-Brown or Brown Plate I (2, both four margins) and Plate II (3 variable margins), & 8d Orange-yellow margins except touching at base. (17) SG Cat £3880

     

    Lot 66
    Estimate: $600 Realised Price : $460

    3d Yellow-green, error Wmk Double-lined '2', SG 87b, clear top and right, just into at base and touched at places on left, cancelled by Sydney obliterator. A presentable example of this rarity. Cat £1600

     

    Lot 67
    Estimate: $2,500 Realised Price : $1,900

    3d Yellow-green, error Wmk Double-lined '2', SG 87b, horizontal pair [42-43] small margins two sides and clear to just touching at left and base, cancelled by legible '6' of St Mary's (rated RRR). A major New South Wales rarity in very fine condition. Cat £3200+ Two pairs are recorded of this error, of which this is by far the finer. It is probable that the pair offered here is the one first recorded as being shown at a meeting of The Philatelic Society of Australia in 1888, and was later in the C.L. Pack Collection
