    AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, NEW SOUTH WALES, POSTAL HISTORY, 1813-1829

    Lot 1081
    Estimate: $1,000 Realised Price : $750

    1813-19 'SYDNEY. NEW SOUTH WALES.' undated circular handstamp struck in black on a fragment of letter, the rear with manuscript notation 'from a letter dated May 17th 1818 J.A.H 1915'. A fine strike of the first handstamp used in the Colony by Isaac Nichols and one of perhaps six in private hands believed to exist. An excellent introductory item to any collection of Colonial marcophily

    Estimate: $1,000 Realised Price : $750

    1823 (1 Oct) entire without any markings headed 'Hobartville' (Richmond residence completed in 1828) and written by Elizabeth Cox (nee Piper) (1792-1872); wife of William Cox Junior (1789-1850 magistrate and founding director of The Bank of New South Wales) to her 15 year old niece Jane McKenzie (1808-40) who was about to marry Sydney solicitor James Norton. A few stains and weakness caused by folds though an early connection to several high profile colonialists

    Estimate: $750 Realised Price : $575

    1829 (21 Aug) entire Scotland to Bathurst, apparently carried privately entering the mail at Sydney on 4.1.1830 and bearing handstruck cds (PHNSW Type S2 - without any traces of the outer circular frame). Unusually rated '1/4'(d) consisting of the 4d inwards ship letter rate plus 1/- internal mileage. The contents written by the wife of William Hutchisons to their daughter, Janet Hutchisons, wife of George Ranken (1793-1860) who was one of the first to be given a 2000 hectare land grant by the Government in 1822 which he named 'Kelloshiel' and to which this letter is addressed. Fine

     

    Lot 1084
    Estimate: $500 Realised Price : $500

    1829 (6 Dec) entire Sydney to Scotland pre-paid '4d' in top right hand corner and struck with the framed 'SYDNEY/POST PAID' (PHNSW Type P1) and the first Sydney cds (PHNSW Type S2 - rare example with frameline complete). Variously rated '1/3'(d), '1/6'(d) both deleted and finally '1/7'(d) and struck with the framed '½'(d) Scottish turnpike wheeled tax. The rear with framed 'INDIA LETTER/KINGSBRIDGE' and UK arrival cds. Peripheral faults though early examples of the Sydney markings
