1848 (16 Sep), 1849 (14 Apr) and 1849 (19 May) small mourning covers all addressed to Maria Windeyer and all endorsed by Dr (later Sir) Charles Nicholson, member of the NSW Legislative Council for his entitlement to franking privileges and each struck with the 'CROWN/FREE' dated handstamp. Following the death of Richard Windeyer in 1847, Nicholson, himself an orphan from an early age, was assisting Mrs Windeyer in the education of her son William Charles Windeyer (1834-97) who later became one of the earliest undergraduates of Sydney University. Nicholson, also Speaker of the NSW House 1846-56 was a founder of the AGL Co. in 1842, collector of fine arts, rare books and antiquities, Chancellor of Sydney University and upon his return to London, a Director of the P&O organisation. A few stains or blemishes but a fascinating connection to high profile colonialists (3) |

1849 (8 May) small cover to England bearing framed 'PAID AT BATHURST' on face and rear with ds of Bathurst, Sydney, London, Clifton and Bristol. Rated '2/-' being double 3d ship letter rate plus double 9d Bathurst to Sydney rate (113 miles) and also charged '2/-' on arrival for a double packet letter. The Sydney Morning Herald of 7.6.1849 notes that mail carried on the 'Tropic' will be the last to carry packet mail after which mail will be forwarded on every vessel at the earliest opportunity. Slightly soiled and rear flap damaged though a scarce double weight country letter for such a small envelope |
