    AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, NEW SOUTH WALES, POSTAL HISTORY, 1846-1849

    Estimate: $200 Realised Price : $260

    1846 (20 Jan) entire Sydney to Newcastle bearing framed and curved ‘NEWCASTLE/ POST PAID' and Newcastle datestamp on face, rated '4'(d) and endorsed 'Prepaid' at lower left. The rear with Sydney arrival datestamp. File fold and few faint tone spots

    Estimate: $400

    1846 (21 Oct) small mourning cover (rear flap defective) Parramatta to Raymond Terrace via Sydney. The rear with datestamps for each of these and the face struck with the oval 'MID-DAY MAIL' to indicate the afternoon delivery of mail from Parramatta. Rated '8'(d) due consisting of the 4d inland rate plus 4d for a coastal vessel from Newcastle to Sydney, few stains though still attractive

    1847 (3 Jun) printed entire from Goulburn Hospital (setting out the terms of admission) to Melbourne. The face bearing framed 'GOULBURN/POST PAID' marking and the rear with Goulburn, Yass and Melbourne (Port Phillip) ds. Rated '2/4d' post-paid. File folds, few tears and blemishes but an unusual highly rated item

    Estimate: $750 Realised Price : $575

    1847 (11 Sep) entire Sydney to Cassilis b/s Sydney ds and Cassilis arrival ds on face (PHNSW Type C65). Rated '1/2'(d) pre-paid. Toned, fragile and repaired though the better of the two examples of this marking recorded and therefore extremely rare

    Estimate: $400

    1847 (30 Oct) outer 'per Ganges' Sydney to London (Coutts & Co - manuscript note on rear concerning mortgages) rated '3'd ship letter rate and '1/-' inwards packet letter rate deleted and re-rated '8'd. Redirected to Bonn, Prussia and rated '1/-' with '6'd British and '4'd Prussian accountancy shares with a total of '12'sgr due. Two soiled file folds however a very unusual redirected cover and one of four NSW pre-stamp covers sent to the German States believed to exist

    Estimate: $1,000 Realised Price : $750

    1847 (11 Nov) OHMS outer from the Colonial Secretary's Office, Sydney and addressed locally bearing an albino embossing of the Sydney Penny Post Seal along side handstruck framed '6 OCLOCK' and circular 'FREE/NO 11/1847'. A few peripheral faults and faint file fold though an attractive used example of this scarce embossing

    Estimate: $600 Realised Price : $460

    1847 (11 Dec) cover Raymond Terrace to England bearing framed 'RAYMOND TERRACE/POST PAID' (three strikes recorded of this marking) and 'PAID SHIP LETTER/SYDNEY' handstamps on face. Rated '7'(d) for a inland letter ship letter with a further '1/-' due on arrival. The rear with Raymond Terrace, London transit and Brighton arrival ds. Few minor blemishes otherwise fine. No contents though written by Maria Windeyer to her sister following the death of her husband Richard Windeyer in Launceston 9 days earlier

    Estimate: $1,500 Realised Price : $1,150

    1848 (2 Feb) outer Scone to the Colonial Secretary, Sydney with manuscript 'Scone/Feb 2/48' in lieu of the Scone datestamp being unavailable and also with framed 'SCONE/FREE' (PHNSW Type F16). Few file folds, opening faults and minor blemishes though the only example seen of this previously unrecorded marking

    Estimate: $100 Realised Price : $90

    1848 (3 Mar) small cover Sydney to London rated '3(d)' ship letter rate and '1/-' inwards packet letter rate with two London cds on rear, 1849 (2 Apr) cover Sydney to England pre-paid '6(d)' double ship letter rate and '1/-' single inwards packet letter rate with London and Knaresbrough cds on reverse; plus 1854 (12 Dec) cover Melbourne to England with 1/- Octagonal stamp removed and rated '6(d)' and handstruck 'd6' upon arrival with Liverpool and Worksop arrival cds on rear. A few peripheral faults and soiling though an interesting group of rates (3)

     

    Lot 1140
    Estimate: $750

    1848 (16 Sep), 1849 (14 Apr) and 1849 (19 May) small mourning covers all addressed to Maria Windeyer and all endorsed by Dr (later Sir) Charles Nicholson, member of the NSW Legislative Council for his entitlement to franking privileges and each struck with the 'CROWN/FREE' dated handstamp. Following the death of Richard Windeyer in 1847, Nicholson, himself an orphan from an early age, was assisting Mrs Windeyer in the education of her son William Charles Windeyer (1834-97) who later became one of the earliest undergraduates of Sydney University. Nicholson, also Speaker of the NSW House 1846-56 was a founder of the AGL Co. in 1842, collector of fine arts, rare books and antiquities, Chancellor of Sydney University and upon his return to London, a Director of the P&O organisation. A few stains or blemishes but a fascinating connection to high profile colonialists (3)

     

    Lot 1141
    Estimate: $300 Realised Price : $240

    1849 (8 May) small cover to England bearing framed 'PAID AT BATHURST' on face and rear with ds of Bathurst, Sydney, London, Clifton and Bristol. Rated '2/-' being double 3d ship letter rate plus double 9d Bathurst to Sydney rate (113 miles) and also charged '2/-' on arrival for a double packet letter. The Sydney Morning Herald of 7.6.1849 notes that mail carried on the 'Tropic' will be the last to carry packet mail after which mail will be forwarded on every vessel at the earliest opportunity. Slightly soiled and rear flap damaged though a scarce double weight country letter for such a small envelope

     

    Lot 1142
    Estimate: $1,000

    1849 (11 May) small mourning cover endorsed 'Registered' from Raymond Terrace to Wollomooloo b/s with Raymond Terrace and Sydney GPO ds. No indication of postage paid or levied though addressed to (Dr) Charles Nicholson, member of the Legislative Council and as such entitled to free delivery. Few peripheral faults though a rare example of internal registered mail
