    1860? cover front to Scotland bearing 6d Diadem perf 12 and Victoria 3d Half-length (2) perf 12 all cancelled numeral '50' (Deniliquin) in rays. A very rare combination franking for 'Riverina' mail. Ex Boker (1981) Cat from £630

    1860 (14 Feb) two covers of the same day and same voyage both sent via Marseilles on the 'Salsette' the first to London showing the ¼oz. 9d rate franked 3d & 6d Diadems variable margins and cover with two vertical file folds, other to Scotland showing the 1/- ½oz. rate franked with 2 x 6d Diadems variable margins. Both with appropriate despatch and arrival cds on face or rear (2)

    Estimate: $100

    1860 (13 Aug) registered outer Goulburn to Sydney, both with b/s at rear franked perforated 2d Diadem and (6d) Registered stamps and manuscript endorsed 'Registered 1267'. Few creases and cancellations blurred though an uncommon example of registered mail

    Estimate: $5,000

    1863 (21 Jul) cover (with contents) Sydney to England bearing 1d Diadem tied by Sydney duplex and endorsed by Private G. Hummerston and signed by Captain J.D. Downing Commander of the 1st Battalion 12th Regiment authorising the concessionary 1d soldiers’ rate. The rear with Preston transit and Fleetwood arrival cds. Few minor blemishes though only two examples of perforated Diadems used to pay this rate. Contents answer an enquiry as to the death of William Proctor whom the writer knew prior to his discharge and who went to York, Western Australia to work. The writer gives information as to how to obtain a death certificate and to make further enquiries with a William Dilly of Vasse, Western Australia (typed transcript included). Fascinating example of military postal history. Ex Jewell and Sattin

    1863 (18 Nov) cover Clarence Town to California franked 1d and strip of three 6d Diadems and 2d DLR all cancelled numeral '58' ray type, representing the 1/9d via Southampton rate. The front with Clarence Town, London and San Francisco cds and Sydney transit cds on rear. Some light soiling though a scarce three colour franking

    1864 (27 May) OHMS entire from NSW Govt Printer and signed by Charles Potter to Kiandra bearing 2d DLR and cancelled part Sydney GPO duplex. The address overscored with manuscript 'Missent to Kiama' and the rear showing its varied journey with cds for Sydney, Wollongong, Kiama, Campbelltown, Goulburn, Cooma and Kiandra. A few stains though a scarce example of misdirected mail

    1864 (5 Oct) small cover franked 1d Diadem tied by Sydney duplex and addressed locally representing the single town letter rate. Rear flap damaged and contains a Sydney Morning Herald notice regarding the capture of bushranger Frank Gardiner

    1864 (20 Oct) cover Newcastle to Dublin franked 1/- Diadem just tied by numeral '55' ray type and representing the ½ oz. via Southampton retaliatory rate to UK which applied between July and November 1864 and rare thus. Rear with Newcastle, Sydney and Irish cds. Faint soiling otherwise fine

    1865 (18 Feb) cover (opened at left) Sydney to Rhode Island endorsed 'per Madras' and franked 1/- Diadem & 2d DLR cancelled two strikes of the Sydney duplex though not tied. London and New York transit datestamp and '16/CENTS' handstamp on front. Faint soiling mainly confined to rear. Ex Davis

    1865 (15 Aug) cover Sydney to Wellington, New Zealand franked 6d Diadem and cancelled and tied by Sydney duplex. Wellington arrival cds on front. Few minor blemishes though an uncommon destination

    1867 (19 Mar) cover West Maitland to London franked 6d Diadem and pair 2d De La Rue, all cancelled (not tied) with ray type numeral '64' and representing the single 10d via Marseilles rate. Backstamped with West Maitland and Sydney cds. A neat cover

    Estimate: $350

    1867 (22 Jun) cover Lithgow to Prussia franked pair 6d Diadem cancelled with ray type numeral and additionally tied by London Paid cds and oval PD handstamps. Aachen transit marking on face and the rear with Bowenfells and Sydney transit marking and Prussian arrival marking. Tears through face and on rear though a scarce destination

    Estimate: $400

    1868 (27 Mar) cover Sydney to London franked 6d Diadem and block of four 1d De La Rue all tied by four strikes of the Sydney duplex and representing the single 10d via Marseilles rate. Small tear at right but an unusual franking and scarce thus. Ex Forster

    1868 (19 May) small cover Sydney to France franked 6d Diadem and 2d DLR both cancelled and tied by Sydney duplex and representing the 8d via Marseilles rate. The front with 'P.D.' marking and French entry mark and a further four French transit or arrival cds on rear. Fine

    1868 (31 Oct) entire Sydney to Valparaiso, Chile franked 3 x 6d Diadems all cancelled and tied by four strikes of the Sydney duplex and representing the double 1/6d via Panama rate. Horizontal file fold and Panama transit cds on front. Very fine and a rare destination

    Estimate: $800

    1870 (28 Jan) large part cover Sydney to Antigua (b/s) Southampton per R.M.S "Geelong"' franked 6d and 1/- Diadems each cancelled and tied with Sydney duplex and representing the ½ oz. rate. The cover rather flimsy and repaired at top, left and rear flap and portion of the reverse missing nonetheless of good appearance

    Estimate: $1,500

    1870 (25 Feb) cover from 'via Marseilles per R.M.S "Avoca"' from Sydney to Antigua (part arrival cds on rear) franked 1/- & 6d Diadems and 4d DLR all cancelled and tied by Sydney duplex and representing the single via Marseilles rate. London Paid cds additionally ties the 1/- value. Rear flap missing and few minor peripheral faults though only two examples of correctly paid via Marseilles rate to Antigua recorded

    Estimate: $1,500

    1870 (18 May) cover Sydney to England franked vertical pair 1/- Diadem and 2d DLR issue cancelled and tied by Sydney duplex and representing the double 1/1d supplementary via Brindisi rate. Some discolouration marks on face and rear flap faulty with part arrival cds though an extremely rare example of this service. Ex Forster

    Estimate: $5,000 Realised Price : $3,500

    1870 (4 Nov) outer wrapper Sydney to England endorsed 'Law Papers only....' and franked 6d Diadem redirected via Brindisi due to the Franco-Prussian War and struck in London with the framed 'INSUFFICIENTLY PAID/FOR BRINDISI ROUTE/ DEFICIENT POSTAGE 1d' and additional blue crayon manuscript on face and Weybridge Station cds on rear. Two tape stains at sides and peripheral faults though the only example of this framed marking (for non-letter rate mail) recorded. Ex Molnar. Illustrated on page 273 in Postal History of NSW

    1870 (30 Dec) mourning cover endorsed 'Via Southampton Per R.M.S. Geelong' Sydney to Antigua franked 1/- and 3d Diadems and 2d DLR all cancelled and tied by three Sydney duplexes. The front with London Paid cds. Rear Flap missing though an attractive three colour franking
