    AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, NEW SOUTH WALES, POSTAL HISTORY, 1872-1878

    Lot 1215
    Estimate: $5,000

    1872 (20 Apr) cover Sydney to Antigua (b/s on rear) endorsed 'via Brindisi' franked 3 x 1/- Diadem & 1d DLR all cancelled and tied by Sydney duplex and apparently underpaying by 3d the double 1/8d via Brindisi rate though not recognised. The front with '1d' credit marking and London Paid cds. Minor flap faults though a very rare franking. Ex Davis

    Estimate: $1,200

    1872 (4 Nov) mourning cover Sydney to Antigua (faint b/s) endorsed 'Via Southampton Per R.M.S Baroda', franked 3d and 1/- Diadems and 2d DLR (slight toning around some perforations) all cancelled and tied by Sydney duplex. The front with handstruck '1d' credit and London Paid transit marking. Faint vertical file fold though an appealing three colour franking

    1874 (17 Apr) cover endorsed 'per Ellora' and 'Via Brindisi' South Head Road to Ireland and b/s Sydney bearing 9d on 10d and 1d De La Rue values additionally tied by Limerick arrival cds. Creased at right and a few stains however very few examples of 1d Galle surcharge recorded

    Estimate: $600 Realised Price : $460

    1874 (15 May) cover Sydney to Edinburgh (b/s) franked 6d and 1/- Diadems and 1d DLR issues either tied by Sydney duplex or by manuscript addressing and representing the double 9d via Brindisi rate plus 1d via Galle rate. Rear flap faulty though an attractive three colour franking

    Estimate: $350

    1874 (9 Sep) cover Wilcannia to London franked strip of three 3d Diadem representing the 9d via Brindisi rate. The stamps cancelled and tied by three strikes of the Wilcannia cds representing incorrect use of the cds as adhesives were to be cancelled with the numeral handstamp. Rear with Hay, Booligal, Sydney and two London cds. File fold and pinholes though an unusual franking

    Estimate: $600

    1875 (23 Jan) cover Sydney to Munich endorsed 'via Galle & Brindisi' and franked 1/- Diadem and 1d DLR both cancelled and tied by two strikes of the Sydney duplex. the front bearing 'P.D.' marking and the rear with Brindisi and Munich cds. Few small peripheral faults otherwise a scarce franking

     

    Lot 1221
    Estimate: $500

    1875 (9 Aug) cover Sydney to Paris (b/s) endorsed 'Via Singapore & Brindisi' and franked 1/- Diadem and 4d and 6d DLR all cancelled and tied by two strikes of the Sydney duplex. The front with 'P.D.' marking and Brindisi transit marking in red. Rear flap missing however an attractive three colour franking

    Estimate: $400

    1877 (29 Sep) entire Sydney to France endorsed 'per P & O Mail Via Brindisi' and franked 8d Diadem and 2d and 1/- DLR all cancelled and tied by two strikes of the Sydney duplex and representing the double 11d via Brindisi rate. French entry mark on face and French transit and arrival cds on rear. Faint horizontal file folds however a very attractive three colour franking. Ex White

    1878 (Aug?) cover front Sydney to France endorsed 'Via San Francisco' franked 8d Diadem tied by N.S.W concentric ovals and bearing purple '1½D' handstamp and London and Calais transit cds. Lightly soiled

     

    Lot 1224
    Estimate: $300

    1878 (28 Oct) small mourning cover Sydney to Rouen franked very late use of 1/- Diadem (replaced two years earlier by 1/- DLR) tied by Sydney duplex and French transit cds. Redirected to Germany upon arrival and charged '10' pfg. Rear flap with tears though an unusual example of redirected mail
