AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, NEW SOUTH WALES, POSTAL HISTORY, UNDERPAID MAIL

    Lot 369
    Estimate: $1,000 Realised Price : $800

Underpaid Mail: 1857 (4 Apr) front only from Sydney to Christchurch, New Zealand with imperf 2d Blue tied by N.S.W. ''piecrust'', underpaid and boxed ''RETURNED FOR/ PREPAYMENT'' struck, following which a imperf 1d Carmine-vermilion was added tied by dumb obliterator. Endorsed ''p Kate Kearney'' with boxed ''TOO LATE'' and with Port Victoria (AP 4 1857) and Nelson (AP 7 1857) d.s., plus handstruck ''2''. A fascinating cover with what is believed to be the only recorded example of the ''RETURNED FOR/PREPAYMENT'' handstamp, ex Trevor Davis and Ed Druce

    Lot 370
    Estimate: $1,000

1858 (21 Jun) envelope from Grafton to London with imperf 1d (tear at top), 2d and 6d (touched or cut into) tied by '90' ray numerals, endorsed 'Via Marseilles' and with boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY STAMPED' handstamp, Grafton, Sydney and arrival (SP 10 58) d.s. Apparently over Ľoz. and therefore underpaid 3d for the Marseilles route, and sent via Southampton. Fine, ex Trevor Davis

    Lot 371
    Estimate: $4,000

1868 (10 Oct) envelope from Penrith to Eltville, Prussia, bearing 6d Purple and 1/- Rose-carmine Perf 13 tied by '7' ray type numerals, and endorsed 'via Marseilles'. Handstruck boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY/STAMPED' and diamond 'GB/1F66c' Anglo-French accountancy mark applied in Sydney, with 'POS. AN. V. SUEZ.P.AN. A. MARS. d.s. in red (26 DEC 68), transit d.s. on reverse including Wiesbaden arrival (28 2 68). An exceptional cover showing very rare use of the Sydney Anglo-French accountancy mark is very rare. Ex Trevor Davis

    Lot 372
    Estimate: $450

1881 (24 Jun) envelope to Germany bearing 1871 8d Yellow Perf 13 tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplex, and endorsed 'Via Naples per John Elder'. The correct rate to Germany at this time was 9d, and the boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY/PAID' was applied, also the rare diamond 'GB/1F66c' Anglo-French accountancy mark. The latter would seem to be an error, as this cover was not routed through France. An unusual usage
