    Watermark Double-lined '2' complete sheet of 120 impressions (12 x 10), folded twice and one corner with tear otherwise fine

     

    Lot 54
    Estimate: $150

    Deep Turquoise-blue Plate I horizontal pair with close to large margins used on lettersheet to Sydney with 1856 (Sep 29) arrival backstamp. Endorsed 'P Shamrock' and cancelled on arrival with 'N.S.W.' piecrust obliterator. Interesting example of the double inland rate

    Estimate: $1,600 Realised Price : $1,200

    Plate I used block of 20, Nos. [77-81/89-93/101-105/113-117], [104] being the first retouch and [115] in the blistered state, cancelled by multiple strikes of the Sydney duplex for SP 25 1858. Margins generally good but touched in two places, holes caused by thinning in three places rebacked with other stamps. Attractive despite faults and the record used multiple, ex Manwood

    Plate I shades used on four covers, 1858 (16 Feb) from Albury to Sydney cancelled '50' ray type numeral, 1859 (14 Apr) Sydney to Mulgrave (flap missing), 1859 (6 Jul) Sydney to Newcastle, and 1859 (8 Oct) Queanbeyan to Sydney cancelled '38' ray type numeral. All adhesives except last with four margins, a useful group (4)

    Plate I (touched at base) tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals on 1858 (27 Sep) envelope to Ipswich, Queensland (OC 10 1858 backstamp). Cover tear at top left, otherwise fine

    Estimate: $120

    Plate I close margins three sides, wide at top showing portion of adjoining unit) used on 1858 (Nov) entire apparently posted at a coastal office and endorsed 'p Yarra Yarra', with adhesive tied by 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals on arrival in Sydney (NO 12 1858 backstamp). Fine

    Three singles, all with clear margins and each showing sheet margin at top tied by Sydney duplexes to 1859 (13 Jul) envelope to Melbourne (red arrival d.s. for JY 16 59 on reverse). Envelope with some minor discolouration and creasing

    No. [104] showing first retouch, good to large margins and lightly cancelled, scarce. Ex Butler. 1966 RPSL cert

    1859 Pale Blue Lithographed, No. [18] with retouch unused, good margins at top and bottom, touched at top left and close or cut into at right. Some staining towards foot, but generally sound and believed to be the only known unused example of this rare stamp. From the Judge Montgomery-Hamilton collection, with 1926 RPSL and 2005 RPSV certificates

    1859 Pale Blue Lithographed, No. [111] showing strong retouch to base frame. Margins in places, however an exceptional example of this retouch and the rarest of the three major types, with very few recorded. Ex Theodore Steinway, with 1942 RPSL cert

    1859 Pale Blue Lithographed, just touched at top left, used on 1859 (Aug 31) mourning envelope from Sydney to Newcastle, cancelled Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplex and with SP 1 1859 arrival d.s. on reverse. Very rare with only about 6-8 lithographs recorded on cover, with 2002 BPA cert

    1859 Pale Blue Lithographed, touched at upper left, tied by '9' sunburst obliterator on 1860 (Mar 2) envelope from Bathurst to Sydney, with MR 5 1860 arrival backstamp. A very rare use on cover, with 1991 BPA cert
