Greenish-grey with four good margins, cancelled dumb obliterator on 1856 (7 Feb) envelope from Sydney to Sandhurst, U.K., endorsed 'Per Hellespont via Southampton'. With handstruck '3' accountancy mark in red, manuscript '4' and circular 'MORE/TO/PAY' in black tying adhesive. The 'Hellespont' was a private ship which carried mail as far as Singapore to connect with the Far East P & O service. On arrival in London the G.P.O. added the 4d charge for the Far East leg of the journey, hence the 'MORE/TO/PAY handstamp and manuscript '4'. One of only two 'Hellespont' covers originating from N.S.W. and an important postal history item, ex Trevor Davis |
