    1856 (21 Oct) envelope from Stoney Creek to Fredericton New Brunswick bearing imperf 2d Blue and 6d Greenish-grey cancelled tied by '164' numerals, with boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY/STAMPED', and handstruck '3' (crossed through in mss). Liverpool transit d.s on face (FE 11) and with Stoney Creek, Orange, Sydney, London, Fredericton and Bathurst d.s on reverse, also mss 'Recd open at Fredericton', part of back flap cut away. A fine franking to a rare destination, ex Trevor Davis and Ed Druce

    1857 (4 Apr) front only from Sydney to Christchurch, New Zealand with imperf 2d Blue tied by N.S.W. 'piecrust', underpaid and boxed 'RETURNED FOR/PREPAYMENT' added, following which a imperf 1d Carmine-vermilion was added tied by dumb obliterator bearing Imperf 1d and 2d cancelled dumb obliterator. Endorsed 'p Kate Kearney' with boxed 'TOO LATE' and with Port Victoria (AP 4 1857) and Nelson (AP 7 1857) d.s., plus handstruck '2'. A fascinating cover with what is believed to be the only recorded example of the 'RETURNED FOR/PREPAYMENT' handstamp, ex Trevor Davis and Ed Druce

    1858 (21 Jun) envelope from Grafton to London with imperf 1d (tear at top), 2d and 6d (touched or cut into) tied by '90' ray numerals, endorsed 'Via Marseilles' and with boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY STAMPED' handstamp, Grafton, Sydney and London (SP 10 58) d.s. Apparently over ¼oz. and therefore underpaid 3d for the Marseilles route, and sent via Southampton. Fine, ex Trevor Davis

    1863 (22 Jun) mourning envelope to Shaftesbury U.K. bearing 6d Purple Diadem Perf 13 vertical pair tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplex, and endorsed 'p Overland Mail via Marseilles'. Prepaid as a ½oz. letter, but overweight and mss '1/3' postage due levied, with handstruck 'DEFICIENT-POSTAGE (9)/Fine__(6) added. Shaftesbury arrival backstamp of JY 17 63. Very fine and attractive, ex J.S. White

    1868 (9 Oct) envelope to London bearing 6d Purple Diadem Perf 13 tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplex Prepaid for the ½oz. rate via Southampton, but overweight, and handstruck 'DEFICIENT POSTAGE 6/FINE_____6/1/-' applied, with circular 'MORE/TO/PAY' added on arrival (London arrival backstamp of DE 7 68). Very fine and attractive, ex J.S. White

    1868 (10 Oct) envelope from Penrith to Eltville, Prussia, bearing 6d Purple and 1/- rose-carmine Diadems Perf 13 tied by '7' ray type numerals, and endorsed 'via Marseilles'. Handstruck boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY/STAMPED' and diamond 'GB/1F66c' Anglo-French accountancy mark applied in Sydney, with 'POS. AN. V. SUEZ. P. AN. A. MARS. d.s. in red (26 DEC 68), transit d.s. on reverse including Wiesbaden arrival (28 2 68). An exceptional cover showing very rare use of the Sydney Anglo-French accountancy mark.     Lot 234
    Estimate: $550

    1881 (24 Jun) envelope to Germany bearing 1871 8d Yellow Diadem Perf 13 tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplex, and endorsed 'Via Naples per John Elder'. The correct rate to Germany at this time was 9d, and the boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY/PAID' was applied, also the rare diamond 'GB/1F66c' Anglo-French accountancy mark. The latter would seem to be an error, as this cover was not routed through France. An unusual usage
