    1850's-early 1900's untidy collection on Hagners and loose in packets with many imperfs, later issues with various wmks and perfs, range of Long Types including various 1904-12 to 5/-, many 'OS' opts, few surcharges, 'OS' and 'SA' punctures, etc, some postmark interest (noted 'PORT DARWIN' - 2), poor to fine (100's). Careful inspection required

    1901-02 Watermark Crown SA 1/- Dark Reddish Brown perf 11½-12½ (large holes), vertical marginal pair, variety 'IMPERFORATE HORIZONTALLY', BW S16a, SG 148a, lower unit two tiny pinholes. Very fresh and fine. One of the great rarities of the Federal period, unpriced in Stanley Gibbons. Of the 5 known pieces of this variety, this is the only known pair. Cat AU$3500

    Postal History: 1842 stampless outer entire letter to Edinburgh endorsed 'P 'Francis Yates' showing fine strike of 'POST OFFICE/(crown/ADEALIDE' double-circle handstamp, rated '6' and '8', reverse with framed 'INDIA LETTER/FALMOUTH' in red and arrival datestamp 'JUN/S 17 M/1842', some reinforcing not detracting from fine appearance

A new discovery (Butler records no covers from this Department) and exceptional addition to any Departmentals collection
