    First Allocation Barred Numerals: '24' (Cullenswood, rated RRR), fine strike tying 4d Courier (cut-to-shape) on 1854 (25 Sep) entire headed 'Parsonage Cullenswood' to Launceston, with two-line 'C'WOOD/25 9 54' postmaster's private handstamp at lower left, and Launceston arrival cds on reverse. Entire with horizontal filing crease, otherwise very fine. The two line handstamp is the only recorded example, ex Malcolm Groom and John Bell

    First Allocation Numerals: '30' (Forcett) legible strike on 1855 4d Blue (margins clear to good). A rare number rated RRRR, with no cover recorded

    First Allocation Barred Numerals: '31' (Antill Ponds) 4d Courier cut-to-shape and cancelled by manuscript 'JA' in pen. This is believed to represent the initials of John Aston, the Postmaster of Antill Ponds at this time. Only two examples recorded

    First Allocation Barred Numerals: '31' (Green Ponds) fine strike on 1d Blue 'Courier' (SG 2, cat £1500), small to good margins but thinned on left side

    First Allocation Barred Numerals: '48' legible strike in red on 1855 Wmk Large Star 1d Carmine (touched at base and just cut into at top, SG 14 cat £850). Presumed to have been struck during the period of use of this number at Hobart, although use at one of the other three offices which used this number (Ouse, Cascades, Impression Bay) cannot be ruled out. Rated RRRR, and the only example recorded in this colour

    First Allocation Barred Numerals: '55' (Spring Hill) - manuscript 'JL' on 1857-59 1d Deep Red-brown (just cut into at upper left), and believed to represent the initials of the Spring Hill Postmaster, Joseph Last

    First Allocation Barred Numerals: '59' (Launceston) superb strike on 1861 (11 Jan) consignee's letter from Melbourne, diamond 'SHIP-LETTER INWARDS FREE backstamp in red, 14JA14 1861. Horizontal filing crease and a few minor stains. Ex Ross Jones, and believed to be the only example of the '59' numeral not used as a canceller

    First Allocation Barred Numerals: '60' (Launceston) superb large part strike in red on 1857-59 4d Pale Blue (four large margins and portions of adjoining units at left and base). Very striking and rated RRRR

    First Allocation Barred Numerals: '62' (Hobart) large part strike in red on 6d Dull Slate-grey (SG 44, just touched at right). Rated RRRR and the only recorded example in this colour

    Second Allocation Barred Numerals: 1861 (6 Mar) printed notice from Bank of Australasia locally used within Hobart, franked 1857-59 1d Pale Red-brown Imperf tied by very fine '52' Numeral, paying the town letter rate, and with 'PRE-PAID/1-O-CLOCK cds in red. Mild horizontal filing crease, otherwise superb, and believed to be the earliest recorded date of use for any Second Allocation Numeral

    Manuscript Cancellations: Small group, cut-to-shape 4d 'Courier' cancelled grid, and pair cancelled squiggles, and Imperf Chalons cancelled grid (2d), cross (6d), star (1d), wavy lines (4d), squiggles (4d), parallel lines (2d pair), and 'Hamilton/4 Jan 61' (4d), '41' (4d), most stamps with faults but a useful lot (12)

    Manuscript 'Registered Torquay/16/8/56' cancelling 1855 4d Blue strip of 4 (touched or cut into at top and touched at bottom left, otherwise clear), a scarce multiple (SG 18, cat £480)

    Manuscript Markings: 1857-59 1d Brick-red Imperf cancelled mss 'Reg letter/8/4/67' and 1863-71 1d Carmine Perf 12½ cancelled mss 'Reg letter/6/6/67', very scarce (2)

     

    Lot 166

    Hobart: 1861 (23 Jan) cover to Sussex, England with 6d Grey cancelled Oval of Bars and additionally tied by red despatch cds, Uckfield arrival backstamp, MA 22 61. In January 1861 Hobart discontinued using the numeral obliterators and adopted the Oval of Bars instead. This cover is the earliest recorded use (one of two known). Both the adhesive and cover with considerable age-staining

    Instructional Types: Range including Loose Ship Letter, Late Letter, Insufficiently Paid, few TPOs, covers including 1899 to NZ with Unclaimed or Undeliverable, 1903 Late Fee mss, 1908 part cover with 22-box 'NOT KNOWN' handstamp (one of only two recorded), etc, mixed condition, fair/fine (120+ items)

     

    Lot 168
    Estimate: $300T Realised Price : $230

    Instructional Markings: Victoria Half-Length Fifth Printing 1d Reddish-brown ('White Veils', SG 12 cat £170, margins all round), and cancelled with straight-line 'NOT-S(TAMPED)' of Hobart in red. The stamp additionally shows a squeezed transfer variety affecting 'ICT'. Very unusual, and illustrated in 'Tasmania: The Postal History and Postal Markings' by Campbell, Purves and Viney. Ex Purves and Diffen
