    1855 (18 Dec) small registered cover Sandhurst to England, b/s Melbourne, Liverpool, London and Mildenhall arrival, bearing 6d Woodblock and imperf 1/- 'Registered', four margins on each, close to large. A few stains and rear flap damage nonetheless a scarce franking

    1857 (14 Sep) outer Melbourne to London franked four margined 6d Woodblock endorsed 'p Emeu' and carried on the ill-fated voyage which stranded on a coral reef in the Red Sea. The Southampton mails were transferred onto the P&O 'Ripon'. A clean and attractive cover with about twenty examples from this incident believed to exist

    1858 (8 Sep) entire Hepburn to Intra, Sardinia (Italian States) extraordinarily franked 3d Half-length strip of five (ironed out crease), 1/- Octagonal vertical strip of five and 1d Emblems (ironed out crease) all faintly cancelled BN '23'. The rate representing the - oz. combined postage rate, 6d GB ship letter rate plus 1/- registration fee. With Hepburn, Melbourne, Alexandria, Malta, Turin and Intra backstamps. Fragile and some peripheral faults. Arguably the most remarkable example of Colonial registered mail extant being an extremely rare rate, destination and franking. Major exhibition item. Ex Bachi & Palmer. BPA & Sismondo certificates

    1859 (19 Mar) cover endorsed 'Per Royal Mail' Beechworth to Bologna, Papal States franked vertical pair imperf 1/- Octagonal and 4d Rose Emblem perf 12 (lower left corner creased when cancelled) tied BN '6' of Beechworth with matching cds on rear and also backstamped Melbourne, Paris and Bologna cds. The face with London and Calais transit cds. 2/4d was the oz. via Southampton rate and is the only example of this rate recorded. Minor stains at lower right though an exotic and very rare destination and illustrated by Palmer (2009) at page 25

    1859 (21 Mar) folded registered wrapper Hepburn to Ballarat via Creswicks Creek (all backstamped) bearing imperforate 1/- Octagonal and 4d perforated Emblems representing the single inland registered rate. Soiled but a scarce franking

    Estimate: $20,000

    1859 (16 Jul) cover Melbourne to Warsaw endorsed 'pr Northam' franked 1/- Octagonal & 1d Emblem perf 12 and roulette pair 2d Emblem cancelled and tied by Melbourne BN '1. Underpaid by d though missent via Marseilles and routed via Paris where the capsule 'F./39' handstamp applied (three examples recorded on mail from Australia). Charged a final '65' kopecks on arrival and the rear with Melbourne, Marseilles, Paris and Warsaw cds. The Northam was stranded on a reef in the Red Sea en route and the mail and passengers landed on the island of Myetta however the ship eventually got clear after five days. One of the most extraordinary Australian States covers extant and probably a unique destination. Extremely fine. Major Exhibition item. Ex Gibson, Davis & Palmer

    1859 (16 Aug) cover Melton to Buckeberg (Thurn & Taxis) franked vertical strip of three 6d Queen-on-Throne additionally tied by Aachen transit handstamp and also with London paid cds and oval 'P' marking. Inscribed 'via Marseilles' and overscored and sent via Southampton. A rare and attractive franking

    1861 (8 Jan) front and large part back folded cover to Melbourne, the reverse with rare Ballan mss despatch marking franked perforated 1/- Octagonal and pair 4d Beaded Oval. Scarce double inland plus registration rate

    1861 (24 May) cover Bunninyong to France with transit markings of Melbourne, London and Calais on reverse and face and franked with tied pair 6d Queen on Throne. A few stains but an uncommon example of mail to France via Southampton

    1861 (25 Jul) entire Melbourne to Birmingham franked pair and single perforated 1/- Octagonal plus 3d Beaded Oval representing the quintuple via Marseilles rate and the only example believed to exist. A famous cover; offered in the Marken and Ganzachenhaus auction in 1921 (Lot 4218). Ex Davis (2002) and Palmer (2010)

    1861 (20 Dec) outer (few file folds) Melbourne to Dunedin 'per Aldinga' franked 2 x 6d Beaded Ovals. Four double rate covers to New Zealand recorded. Fine and unusual

    1863 (26 Aug) cover Sandridge to New York with UK accountancy and transit markings on face, franked perforated 1/- Octagonal and 6d Adapted Design (closed tear) and routed 'via Marseilles'. A few minor filing faults but a very early example of the revised Marseilles rate of which five examples are recorded by Palmer

    1864 (17 Oct) registered cover front Deep Creek to Switzerland franked pair 1/- Octagonals, 4 x 6d Adapted Design and 2d Laureate representing the via Marseilles double registered rate. The front with REGISTERED/MELBOURNE cds, two strikes of the framed 'P.D.' marking and French 'CHARG' marking. Rare and colourful franking. Ex Jaffe and Palmer

    1865 (25 Jul) cover Melbourne to Belfast, Prince Edward Island bearing strip of three of 6d Adapted design tied by Melbourne duplex, mss '5' and '1', London Paid transit and Prince Edward Island arrival cds on rear. The sole example recorded by Palmer. Ex Lehr (1992)

    1866 (22 Oct) cover Richmond to New Brunswick franked 2d & 10d Laureates both tied by duplex cancel and endorsed 'Via Panama'. A few defects including tear and stain at top however one of the few examples of mail endorsed via Panama and paid accordingly and the only example recorded to this destination

    1872 (16 Jul) and 1876 (23 Dec) covers Melbourne to Genoa (b/s on rear of both) the first with solo franking 9d on 10d Laureate and the other 1/- Bell and 3d Laureate. Addressee's name excised on both, nevertheless scarce and attractive frankings (2)

    1872 (29 Oct) unfranked small envelope Kilmore to St Petersburg, Russia inscribed 'via Trieste' and overscored. Unpaid and consequently sent via Marseilles and struck with the GB 'diamond' accountancy mark. Charged a total of '72' kopecks on arrival. The sole example of mail to Russia in the pre-UPU period. Ex Davis

Backstamped Melbourne and 'MARSEILLE A LYON/SPECIAL in dated double ring. Few small defects at rear however a very scarce example of mail carried by a French packet
