    Lot 165
    Estimate: $800 Realised Price : $1,100

1886-96 Wmk Crown SA (close) Perf 10 2/6d to £20 optd Type 4 (12½ x 2mm), with additional £3 showing broken ‘D’ of ‘POUNDS’, part o.g. and some with adhesions on reverse, above average quality for this set (14)

This overprint was used for the U.P.U. distribution of August 1889

    Lot 166
    Estimate: $1,000 Realised Price : $2,600

1886-96 Wmk Crown SA (close) Perf 10 2/6d to £20 optd Type 5 (17½ x 2mm), all wmk upright except 2/6d wmk sideways, generally fine part o.g. except £5 with tone spots and a rare complete set with this overprint (13)

The 2/6d watermark sideways may have been specially printed for this set, as it is unknown without the Type 6 SPECIMEN overprint

    Lot 167
    Estimate: $800 Realised Price : $2,200

1886-96 Wmk Crown SA (close) Perf 10 2/6d to £20 optd Type 2 (18½ x 2½mm), all Wmk Upright Perf 10 except £3 (wmk sideways) and £5 Perf 11½-12½, most part o.g. and a few small faults including some stamps a little faded. A scarce complete set with this type (13)

The Type 2 overprint was probably only used to deface sets that were affixed to the 1889 display sheets (see following two lots)

    Lot 168
    Estimate: $1,000 Realised Price : $2,700

1889 Printed Sheet headed ‘SPECIMEN/SOUTH AUSTRALIAN POSTAGE AND REVENUE STAMPS,/WITH DATE OF ISSUE’ and bearing Wmk Crown SA (close) Perf 10 2/6d to £20 (except £5, perf 11½-12½) optd Type 2, plus 1883-95 3d and 6d Perf 10 optd Type 4. The sheet bears the imprint ‘100 - 24-4-89’. Roughly cut along left edge, otherwise very fine

This sheet was bound into the Proceedings of the Postal and Telegraph Conference held in Adelaide in May 1890. The £3 perf. 10 in this sheet is very rare, as that value is usually represented by the perf. 11½-12½ stamp

    Lot 169
    Estimate: $1,200 Realised Price : $5,000

1889 Printed Sheet (210 x 268mm) headed ‘SPECIMEN/SOUTH AUSTRALIAN POSTAGE AND REVENUE STAMPS,/WITH DATE OF ISSUE’ and bearing Wmk Crown SA (close) Perf 10 2/6d to £3 optd Type 2 (except £3, Perf 11½x 12½), and the £4 to £20 (except £5, Perf 11½-12½) with manuscript ‘Specimen’, plus 1883-95 3d and 6d Perf 10 optd Type 4. Fine except for a few small peripheral tears. A rare sheet with the five highest values substituted by the manuscript overprint. Ex E.A. Williams collection

    Lot 170
    Estimate: $750 Realised Price : $4,400

1886-96 Wmk Crown SA (close) Perf 10 £4 to £20 with manuscript ‘Specimen’, as used on the 1889 Display Sheet, generally fine and small part o.g. Rare (5)

The Type 6 overprint seems to have been used just prior to the replacement of the £5 grey with the £5 brown in 1895. The complete set has yet to be recorded with this overprint

    Lot 172
    Estimate: $500 Realised Price : $625

1886-96 Wmk Crown SA (close) Perf 11½-12½ £5 Brown pair and single with Type 7 overprint (15¼ x 2mm). Pair superb full gum unmounted, single no gum

The Type 7 overprint (very similar to Type 6 but slightly longer) is found only on this stamp

    Lot 173
    Estimate: $500 Realised Price : $575

1892 Wmk Crown SA (wide) Perf 11½-12½ Reprints 2/6d to £20 (£15 on close wmk), the £1 being in a horizontal pair, optd Type 4 (12½ x 2mm). Usual perf defects found on this printing, and mostly part o.g. (14)

The Postage & Revenue reprints on wide Crown over SA paper were made in 1892 to provide stocks for a further distribution to the U.P.U. The rough perforation is characteristic, and there are shade differences with the originals

    Lot 174
    Estimate: $2,500 Realised Price : $3,000

1892 Wmk Crown SA (wide) Perf 11½-12½ Reprints 2/6d to £20 (£15 on close wmk), in horizontal strips of 5 optd Type 4 (12½ x 2mm). Usual perf defects and a few other small faults. A rare set of multiples. Ex Chapman (13 strips of 5)

Between 1892 and 1908 each U.P.U. member received quintuple sets of ‘SPECIMEN’ stamps, usually supplied in strips of 5

    Lot 175
    Estimate: $250 Realised Price : $525

1892 Wmk Crown SA (wide) Perf 11½-12½ Reprints 15/- horizontal strip of 4 and 50/- with Type 4 overprint, each showing duty plate misplaced upwards, unusual and presumably only one sheet of 60 each originally existed (5)

    Lot 176
    Estimate: $750 Realised Price : $1,050

1892 Wmk Crown SA (wide) Perf 11½-12½ - Printed Sheet headed ‘SPECIMEN/ SOUTH AUSTRALIAN REVENUE STAMPS,/WITH THE DATE OF ISSUE’ with 2/6d to £20 Reprints on wmk Crown over SA (wide) (except £15 on close paper) optd Type 4, and additionally with £5 Brown optd Type 7

    Lot 177
    Estimate: $100 Realised Price : $210

1892 Wmk Crown SA (wide) Perf 11½-12½ Reprint £20 Claret with wide wmk with Type 4 overprint and inverted watermark, very scarce part o.g.

    Lot 178
    Estimate: $400 Realised Price : $625

1892 Wmk Crown SA (wide) Perf 11½-12½ Reprint £10 and £20 with wide wmk and £15 with close wmk with Type 4 overprint, each additionally with ‘REGISTERED ADELAIDE/SA squared circle datestamp for MA 11 95, £20 with scarce inverted watermark. Each with separate 2007 Ceremuga Certificate (3)

Ed Williams, in ‘The Postage & Revenue Stamps of South Australia’ mentions a complete set of reprints with similar Registered datestamp of the same date; it seems possible that this was an additional defacement for some specific presentation, rather than curiosities contrived by a collector

    Lot 179
    Estimate: $250 Realised Price : $550

1892 Wmk Crown SA (wide) Perf 11½-12½ Reprint £20 Claret optd Type 2 (18½ x 2½mm), part o.g. (streaky), very scarce
