    1884-1900 Wmk V over Crown Perf 12½ Engraved £50 Black-Violet (SG 284a) with margins all round cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s MR 6 97. Couple of gum splashes on selvedge, otherwise virtually full o.g. , fine and rare in this form

    1884-1900 Wmk V over Crown Perf 12½ Engraved £100 Aniline Crimson (SG 285c) with margins all round cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s MR 6 97. Very fine with virtually full o.g. and rare in this form

    Cancelled-to-order stamps prior to the sale of collector’s sets in 1900 are unusual and their purpose is uncertain

    1900-02 Collector’s Sets 2/6d to £100 large-size Stamp Duties (the £25, £50 £100 being typographed, SG 289-291) cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. NO 20 00. Some with large part o.g. and generally fine (21)

    Collector’s sets were placed on sale in September 1900. Sets could be either cancelled-to-order or overprinted Type 21 italic ‘Specimen’ and were sold for £1 (½d to £1 set) or £5 (½d to £100)

    1901 Federal Presentation Set ½d to £100 Postage and ½d to 5/- Postage Dues comprising 36 of the 44 stamps included (lacking the £1/5/-, £1/10/-, £2, £5, £6, £7, £9 and £10) cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. FE 5 01 (or FE 1 01 for £25, £50 and £100). Many with large part o.g. and generally fine, a scarce group (36)

    Estimate: $750 Realised Price : $700

    1901 Federal Presentation Set two printed sheets headed with coat-of-arms and ‘SET OF POSTAGE [or REVENUE] STAMPS’/OF/VICTORIA,/Prepared for Presentation to each Member of the Legislatures of the several States of/Australia on the Transfer of the Post Office to the Commonwealth.’ with ½d to £1 Postage and ½d to 5/- Postage Dues cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. FE 5 01, also 1d and 6d Postage unused which may be spurious additions. Apparently an official means of presentation of these sets not seen by us before (see also the Western Australia set, Lot 531). Some toning around perfs of some stamps, and one sheet with several marks. Unusual

    Estimate: $200 Realised Price : $220

    1905-13 Wmk Crown over A Perf 12½ £1 KEVII cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. NO 11 10, fine without gum. Also with P.M.G. headed notepaper with typed ‘With the Postmaster-General’s compliments’ and dated ‘Melbourne, 8th Nov., 1910’

    Sets were prepared for presentation to Federal Parliamentarians to mark the inter-changeability of States stamps, which came into operation on 13 October 1910

    1905-13 Wmk Crown over A Perf 12½ £1 KEVII cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. JY 17 14. Large part o.g. with diagonal crease in top right corner not visible from face

    1905-13 Wmk Crown over A ½d to £2 ‘POSTAGE’ series (1½d, 2/- Wmk V over Crown) cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. MR 22 11. Very fine and large part o.g. (15)

    Cancelled-to-order sets with later dates are believed to have been prepared for specific presentations to P.O. officials or other dignitaries
