    SPECIMEN STAMPS OF THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, WESTERN AUSTRALIA, CANCELLED-TO-ORDER STAMPS

    Lot 527
    Estimate: $1,000 Realised Price : $1,600

    1854 4d Blue and 1/- Pale Brown lithographs, 1885 1d on 3d Pale Brown and 1888 Wmk Crown CA sideways Perf 14 2d Grey, cancelled-to-order with the lower portion of the ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. with blank base. 1/- with pre-printing paper crease. Generally fine and rare (4)

    These stamps were remainders held in Perth and returned to Melbourne following Federation, and subsequently cancelled-to-order for presentation purposes. The number of stamps dealt with in this manner must have been very small as examples are rare. The 4d has portions of the year date, probably ‘03’. (See the WA Handbook, page 223)

    1882-93 Wmk Crown CA sideways Perf 14 ½d Green, 3d Red-Brown, 4d Chestnut, 5d Bistre, 6d Bright Violet, 1/- Olive-Green cancelled-to-order with four concentric circles. 1/- with straight edge at right, otherwise fine without gum. Ex Butler (6)

    1898-1901 Wmk W Crown A Perf 14 1d Carmine, 2d Bright Yellow and 2½d blue cancelled-to-order with four concentric circles. Fine without gum. Ex Butler (3)

    1901 Federal Presentation Set comprising 1882-5 3d and 6d, 1885-93 ½d, 2d, 2½d, 4d, 5d, 6d and 1/-, 1888 1d, 2d and 4d, and 1898-1901 1d, 2d and 2½d cancelled-to-order with 7-bar dumb obliterator. The complete set as presented to Federal and State Parliamentarians, together with letter of presentation for The Hon. J.A.K. Mackay, MLC (N.S.W.). A very scarce set, some part o.g. and generally fine (14)

    Estimate: $1,000 Realised Price : $850

    1901 Federal Presentation Set two printed sheets headed with coat-of-arms and ‘SET OF POSTAGE [or REVENUE] STAMPS’/OF/VICTORIA,/Prepared for Presentation to each Member of the Legislatures of the several States of/Australia on the Transfer of the Post Office to the Commonwealth.’ with set of 14 stamps cancelled with 7-bar dumb obliterator affixed. Apparently an official means of presentation of these sets not seen by us before (see also the Victoria set, Lot 503). 1/- damaged, otherwise stamps fine, sheets with a few marks

    1901 Federal Presentation Set, a partial set comprising 1882-5 3d and 6d, 1885-93 ½d, 2d, 2½d, 4d, 5d and 1/-, 1888 4d, and 1898-1901 2d and 2½d cancelled-to-order with 7-bar dumb obliterator. Generally fine and some part o.g. (11)

    Estimate: $800 Realised Price : $1,900

    1912 Presentation Set comprising Wmk W Crown A 2½d, 6d and 1/-, Wmk V over Crown 1d, 2/-, 2/6d, 5/-, 10/- and £1, Wmk Crown over A ½d, 2d, 3d, 4d, 5d, 8d, 9d, 10d and 1d on 2d cancelled-to-order with ‘PERTH/WESTN AUSTRALIA’ or ‘S.M.R./ PERTH W.A.’ c.d.s. with various dates. Also Wmk V over Crown 2/- and 5/-, Wmk Crown over A ½d and 4d punctured ‘OS, and the 1d Telegraph stamp cancelled-to-order, probably in Melbourne. Generally fine with large part o.g. A very scarce group (23)
