    SPECIMEN STAMPS OF THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, WESTERN AUSTRALIA, U.P.U. RECEIVING AUTHORITY HANDSTAMPS

    Lot 522
    Estimate: $500 Realised Price : $380

    1895 Wmk Crown CA sideways Perf 14 ½d on 3d Red-Brown surcharge double in red and green, optd Bechuanaland receiving ‘SPECIMEN (21½ x 2¾mm). Part toned gum, fine and unique

    Between 1893 and 1901 stamps were supplied to the U.P.U. in mint condition. The Bechuanaland receiving handstamp was applied to all stamps received without any form of defacement

    Estimate: $1,000 Realised Price : $850

    1902 Wmk V over Crown Perf 12½ Melbourne Printings £1 Orange-Brown cancelled-to-order with four concentric circles and with additional diagonal ‘MUESTRA’ overprint. Fine part o.g. and possibly the only recorded example

    The ‘MUESTRA’ handstamp is believed to have been used for U.P.U. stamps sent to Spanish colonies, but was applied only to the top denominations of a series, hence it is rarely seen

    Estimate: $2,500 Realised Price : $2,600

    1901 Wmk W Crown A Perf 14 2½d unused, 1902 Wmk V over Crown Perf 12½ 1d to £1 Orange-Brown cancelled-to-order with four concentric circles, and 1905-07 5d unused, and 3d, 6d and 1/- cancelled-to-order with ‘PERTH’ c.d.s, all affixed to piece of ledger page and with additional ‘ULTRAMAR’ handstamp in blue or violet. Overall toning and some spots around perfs on some values, otherwise generally fine. Ex the Goa archive (16)

    Between 1895 and 1910 U.P.U. specimen stamps sent to Lisbon for distribution to Portuguese Colonies were further handstamped ‘ULTRAMAR’ prior to despatch

    Estimate: $500 Realised Price : $650

    1899 Wmk W Crown A Perf 14 2d unused, 1905-07 3d, 6d, 9d and 1/-cancelled-to-order with ‘PERTH’ c.d.s, with additional ‘ULTRAMAR’ handstamp in blue (2d) or violet. Fine, 2d part o.g., others no gum (5)

    1902 Wmk V over Crown Perf 12½ 1d to £1 cancelled-to-order with four concentric circles, and 1905-07 2d and 5d unused, and 3d and 6d (5) cancelled-to-order with ‘PERTH’ c.d.s, all affixed to ledger page struck with the triple-circle ‘POSTES ET TELEGRAPHES/COLLECTION/DE BERNE/MADAGASAR’ handstamp in red, very fine (20)

    The Madagascar U.P.U. collection was mounted on ledger pages and overstruck with the triple-circle handstamp. The five 6d’s on this page represent the complete quintuple distribution
