    THE DIADEMS, IMPERFORATE ISSUES, THREE PENCE

    Plate Proof in Bluish-green on unwatermarked white wove paper, from top left corner of sheet with full selvedge, few minor stains outside design, but lovely colour and impression and very fine

    Estimate: $400 Realised Price : $240

    Yellow-green (huge margins all round showing portions of adjoining units on three sides) used with 6d Grey (large margins all round) tied to 1858 (10 Mar) outer from Sydney to London (MY 4 58 arrival ds in red), endorsed ‘pr 'Emeu' overland via Marseilles’. Minor stains along top of 6d and vertical filing fold, otherwise an extremely fine example of 9d via Marseilles rate for a ¼oz. letter. The quality of the adhesives would be difficult to better

    Dull Green horizontal pair with small to good margins all round, cancelled ‘NSW’ in concentric ovals. Rarely seen this fine. SG 115, Cat. £160+

    Estimate: $300 Realised Price : $240

    Yellow-green horizontal pair very fine with good margins all round, cancelled ray type ‘51’ on 1857 (28 Aug) outer (reduced front and back flap only) from Deniliquin to London from the famous Lewes correspondence, with London arrival ds in red (DE 7 57) tying stamps. Carried on the P. & O. steamer Emeu which ran aground in the Red Sea, the Southampton mails being transferred to the Ripon. A fine example from this wreck

    Yellow-green vertical pair cut close at top right but large margins elsewhere tied by Sydney obliterators to 1858 (10 Mar) envelope to Melbourne, Sydney despatch and ‘SHIP LETTER/FREE/ G.P.O. VICTORIA’ d.s in red (AP 17 1858) on reverse. Fine 6d ship letter usage

    Estimate: $600 Realised Price : $1,100

    Bluish-green unused without gum, small to good margins all round, light overall toning but scarce. SG 116, Cat. £900

    Estimate: $300 Realised Price : $260

    3d Diadem - the three listed shades of Yellow-green, Bluish-green and Dull Green, superb singles with good to large margins all round, a wonderful trio. SG 115/117, Cat. £250 (3)

     

    Lot 539
    Estimate: $500

    3d Diadem - the remainder, comprising Yellow-green (8) and Dull Green (5) all picked four-margin examples virtually free of defects. Also Yellow-green single tied on 1856 (9 Dec) envelope from Sydney to Melbourne, stamp just touched at left, and envelope with stain at top (13 + 1 cover). SG 115/117, minimum Cat. £1145
