    1d orange-brown, SG 1a, attractive full-margined pair, close at top, from right margin of sheet. Certificate states 'faint trace of tiny thin largely in margin at centre'. Ex Pack, Lock, Purves, Perry

    1d orange-brown, SG 1a, full-margined pair, portion of three adjoining units, tied by Butterfly '1' on 1850 (14 Mar) cover to St. Kilda, paying 2d double Town Letter rate. Perhaps the finest of the five covers recorded bearing a pair of the original state 1d. Another cover from this correspondence, of slightly lesser quality, realised AU$41900+ in our March 2006 sale

    1d orange-brown, SG 1a, vertical pair, crease in lower unit, full-margined except where barely touched at right, affixed by locally applied gum and cancelled by Butterfly '21' on 1850 (12 Jun) cover Ballan to Sydney, paying 2d Inland Letter rate, fine Ballan datestamp on reverse. Five covers are recorded bearing a pair of the original state 1d. Ex Wawn, Perry

    1d dull chocolate-brown, SG 1b, full-margined, one of the finest examples of this shade extant. A far rarer shade in comparison with orange-brown than catalogue differential would suggest. Ex Perry

    1d dull chocolate-brown, SG 1b, attractive strip of three, negligible thinning in first unit. The record multiple in this shade, and one of the most desirable items extant in original state printings. Ex Berry, Harvey, Perry. Illustrated Kellow page 32

    2d lilac-mauve, SG 2, from right margin of sheet, portion of adjoining unit at left, lovely full shade, tied by pressure of indentation of Butterfly '4' to 1850 (10 Feb) cover Broken River to Melbourne, paying 2d Inland Letter rate, Broken River and Melbourne backstamps.     Estimate: $20,000 Realised Price : $19,000

    2d grey-lilac, SG 3a, full-margined and superb, cancelled Butterfly '15' on 1850 (18 Feb) Official cover Geelong to Melbourne. The cover with tear at centre although the most attractive of the four covers recorded from this printing stone (SG 3/a). Ex Pack, Boker, Perry

    2d grey-lilac, SG 3a, pair, an atypical 'pastel-grey' shade, small thin at base of second unit. Pairs are the largest multiples in the original state 2d and very few are recorded. Ex Pack, Wawn, Forster, Perry

    3d bright blue, SG 4, full-margins except where shaved at base, lightly creased prior to affixing to 1850 (12 Mar) entire letter where it is tied by Butterfly '1', sent Melbourne to U.K. per 'Cockermouth Castle' at 3d Ship Letter rate. One of the more attractive of the small number of solo-franked first printing 3d covers

    3d bright blue, SG 4, in combination with second printing 3d Blue, eighth printing 2d cinnamon and fourth printing 2d grey (SG 4a, 17 and 10), cancelled Butterfly '23' on 1851 (18 Jan) cover Burn Bank to U.K., paying 10d double Inland/Ship Letter rates. Rated by Perry as one of the most remarkable frankings in the Ham printing 'Half-lengths'. Ex Caspary, Forster, Perry. Illustrated Kellow colour plate 3

    3d bright blue, SG 4, the extraordinary and beautiful unused vertical strip of four with full base margin, crease in first and last units in no way detracting. Equal record unused multiple (the other a defective horizontal strip). Justifiably ranked amongst the greatest items of the Australian Colonies. Ex Pack, Dale-Lichtenstein. Illustrated Kellow page 34

    3d blue, SG 4a, full-margined pair, left unit showing prominent secondary flaw in upper panel, neatly cancelled Butterfly '1' (Melbourne). Ex Perry

    Estimate: $7,500 Realised Price : $5,750

    3d blue, SG 4a, unused part o.g. strip of three, thinnings and tears, although the record unused multiple in private hands (The Royal Collection contains a rejoined block of four). Ex Pack, Wawn, Perry

     

    Lot 1026
    Estimate: $12,500 Realised Price : $11,000

    3d blue retouched, SG 4ac, [10] retouch below 'V' and in border beside elbow at right, large margins except where barely touched upper right, in combination with third printing 1d dull orange-vermilion, (SG 8 - two singles, one creased), tied by Butterfly '15' to 1851 (5 Apr) cover Geelong to U.K. per 'Lochnagar', paying 5d Inland/Ship Letter rates. The [10] retouch occurred only once in the sheet of 120, whereas the [11] (SG 4ab) appeared eight times. The only example of a [10] retouch on cover and one of the more attractive Ham printing Half-length covers. Ex Purves, Perry
