THE KEN BARELLI CLASSIC VICTORIA, 1852-56 2D QUEEN-ON-THRONE, 1854 LITHOGRAPHED BY J.S. CAMPBELL & CO.

    Lot 1299
    Estimate: $750

Stone 2: 2d purple-black [16], SG 19b, very large-margined example from earliest printings, with Half-length third state 3d pale greenish blue (SG 11b) from right margin of sheet, touched top and base, a rare delicate shade (which is not faded), tied by Barred Oval '5' to 1854 (25 Jan) cover Sandhurst to U.K., paying 5d combined Inland/Ship Letter rate

    Lot 1300
    Estimate: $2,000

Stone 4: 2d brownish purple [49], SG 19, and 'Emblems' 4d (SG 42a), large-margined except for 4d touched at right, tied to 1857 (22 Jun) cover Melbourne to Sydney at 6d Ship Letter rate. Rare mixed issue combination franking

    Lot 1301
    Estimate: $7,500

Stone 5: 2d black-violet 'Substituted transfer' horizontal pair [32-43], SG 20ca, [32] substituted for [42], large-margined except where barely touched at lower right. Kellow records only seven substitutions in multiples (also a single), two of which are in The Royal Collection. The premier item in the substitutions in private hands. Illustrated Kellow colour plate 5. Ex Heslop, Perry

    Lot 1302
    Estimate: $1,000

Stone 9: 2d black, SG 22a, rejoined pair [11/21], large-margined except where barely touched at left base. This rare shade is thought to be a proof pressed in to postal use. Kellow states 'about a dozen copies have so far been recorded', rendering this at 120 a most under-catalogued item

    Lot 1303
    Estimate: $1,500

Stone 9: 2d black pair [40-50], large-margined, tied by Barred Numeral '1' (Melbourne) to piece. Superb intense colour example. Ex Harvey, Perry

    Lot 1304
    Estimate: $1,000

Stone 9: 2d lilac-drab pair [36-37] in an uncharacteristic shade (cf typical 'grey-drab' for Stone '9' printings) on distinctive thin hard paper not found elsewhere in Campbell printings, large-margined, cancelled Barred Numeral '2' (Geelong). Apparently a proof pressed in to use. Ex Purves, Perry
