THE KEN BARELLI CLASSIC VICTORIA, 1852-56 2D QUEEN-ON-THRONE, 1855-56 LITHOGRAPHED BY CAMPBELL & FERGUSSON

    Lot 1305
    Estimate: $5,000

Stone A: 2d lilac 'TVO' variety [48], SG 36b, in superb [47-48] pair, cancelled Barred Numeral '23' (Buninyong). The premier example amongst the small number of used recorded of this celebrated creased transfer variety. Ex Amundsen, Boker, Perry. Illustrated Kellow page 77

    Lot 1306
    Estimate: $750 Realised Price : $575

Stone A: 2d lilac pairs [29/39] and [37-38], large-margined, which reconstruct to form the balance of the creased transfer which produced the 'TVO' variety (SG 36b), the affected areas extending in a diagonal line through [29], [39] and [38], respectively. These varieties are of equal rarity to their more famous cousin. Ex Perry. Illustrated Kellow page 77 (together with 'TVO' item which precedes this lot)

    Lot 1307
    Estimate: $10,000 Realised Price : $7,500

Stone A: 2d purple (SG 36a) remarkable large-margined block of four [37-38/47-48] on 1856 (12 Apr) Official cover (a little stained at left) locally addressed at Melbourne and paid for extraordinary quadruple Town Letter rate, the block tied by filing pinhole (upper left unit) and 2mm punch hole, which extends through lower left unit and cover, these apparently related to Post Office handling, 'ADVERTISED/AND/ UNCLAIMED' and rare oval 'T.C/AP 14/1856' (in red) applied. Kellow records six blocks of four in the Campbell & Fergusson printings, this being the only example on cover. One of the most spectacular frankings of the 'Queen-on-Throne' series. Ex Kellow

    Lot 1308
    Estimate: $750

This extremely rare shade, similar to Ham's 'chestnut' (SG 18a) and Campbell's 'black' (SG 22a), is believed to be a proof/colour trial pressed in to postal use. Kellow states 'about one dozen copies known', clearly confirming that at 70 the catalogue value is irrelevant. Ex Perry
