    The mint collection, comprising 1d Scarlet, 3d shades (7), 3d Wmk '6' (2 - Yellow-green & Dull Green, both unused and with rough perforations), 5d Dark Bluish-green pair and singles (2) and 1/- Rose-Carmine. Most with part o.g. some small faults but a useful group with high catalogue value. Also 3d, 5d, 8d and 1/- optd diagonal 'SPECIMEN' (19)

    6d Mauve (overlapping top of cover) tied by '221' ray type numeral on 1864 (22 Oct) envelope from Hunters Hill to Losone, Switzerland, with mss '90' accountancy mark in red crayon and 'AUSTRALIE/V. SUEZ AMB.' d.s (11 DEC 64) on face, reverse with various despatch and transit d.s. Some small faults and staining on reverse, ex Trevor Davis. Switzerland is a very scarce destination for N.S.W. mail

    6d Purple used on covers to England, comprising two singles on 1869 (30 Jan) double rate cover From Sydney to London (faulty back flap and some peripheral tears); 1869 (1 Jan) cover from Clarence Town to Surrey (light vertical creases not affecting adhesive); 1869 (21 Apr) cover from Sydney to Twickenham (age stain on reverse); and 1869 (29 Jun) cover from Wentworth to London. (4 covers)

    6d Purple used with 4d DLR strip of three all tied by '507' ray type numerals to 1871 (23 Feb) envelope with contents from Tocumwal to Tennessee, U.S.A., 'SAN FRANCISCO CAL/10' d.s (APR 13) on face, and four transit d.s on reverse. Endorsed 'Via England Overseas Route' but apparently underpaid and sent by the trans-Pacific route. Small portion of back flap missing and stain on face (apparently where an adhesive was removed prior to posting)

    6d Violet tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplex to 1863 (21 May) envelope to Mauritius, with red crayon accountancy marking '6' overwritten with '8'. Mahebourg arrival backstamp (JY 31 63). Part of back flap missing still a fine cover to a very scarce destination

    6d Violet tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplex to 1865 (22 Jul) entire to Brisbane, endorsed 'pr Steamer', reverse with 'SHIP LETTER/QUEENSLAND d.s (JY 24 65) across join. Fine

    6d Violet tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplex to 1867 (21 Jun) envelope to Major Kent of the 77th Regiment at Peshawar, India, endorsed 'Per first Mail Via Calcutta'. Arrival d.s in red on face, reverse with Calcutta and Lahore transit d.s. Fine

Reverse with various Indian transit d.s. Some peripheral age stains but a fine double rate cover to a scarce destination

    1/- Rose-carmine used with 4d DLR tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplex to 1869 (31 Dec) entire to Libourne, France, endorsed 'Via Marseilles', and with unframed 'P.D.' in red. Arrival d.s. on reverse for 24 FEVR 70. Some flap faults still a fine example of the 1/4d rate for a ½oz. letter via Marseilles

    1/- Carmine (2 in differing shades) and 8d Red-orange tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric oval duplexes to 1864 (22 Aug) entire to London, endorsed 'p Madras via Marseilles' with arrival d.s (OC 17 64) on face. Filing crease barely affects one 1/- stamp. A scarce combination of adhesives, 2/8d being the 1oz. rate to U.K. via Marseilles in force from July to November 1864 only, ex Trevor Davis

    1/- Carmine used with 2d DLR tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplexes to 1865 (20 Apr) envelope to Providence, Rhode Island. Handstruck '16/CENTS' and mss '8' accountancy marks in red, latter also tying 1/-, with London transit datestamp and indistinct New York arrival datestamp on face

     

    Lot 242
    Estimate: $500

    1/- Carmine used with 2d DLR tied by Sydney duplexes on 1867 (1 Jun) envelope to Bordeaux, France, endorsed 'via Panama', mss '8' accountancy mark in red and 'PD' in circle in red on face, with arrival datestamp (26 AOUT 67) on reverse. Despite the endorsement, this cover was sent on the usual P&O service leaving Sydney on 24 June

    1/- Carmine used with 1871 Wmk Crown over NSW (I) 1d and 2d (4) all tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplexes to 1872 (7 Sep) mourning envelope to Antigua, endorsed 'Via Brindisi per R.M.S. Tanjore'. With handstruck '1d' and mss '11' accountancy marks on face and Antigua arrival d.s. (NO 17 72) on reverse. Small portions of back flap missing, still an exceptional example from this famous correspondence

    1/- Carmine vertical pair tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplexes to 1873 (19 Apr) entire to Bordeaux, France, endorsed 'Via Brindisi' Unframed 'P.D.' in black and 'AUSTRALIE/V. BRIND A MOD' d.s, in red on face. One stamp slightly affected by filing crease, and portion of flap missing at right. Ex Trevor Davis

    1/- Carmine with 1871 Wmk Crown over NSW (I) 1d tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplexes to 1874 (16 May) mourning envelope (flap missing) to London. Small mss '1/1' at left, the rate representing the rare 1/1d U.K. rate due the imposition of the retaliatory 'Galle Penny' charge between February 1874 and May 1875. Ex J.S. White and illustrated in the 'The Postal History of NSW' at page 328

    Estimate: $800

    1/- Carmine tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplex to 1874 (4 Sep) entire to Nantes, France, endorsed 'Via Galle & Brindisi'. With unframed 'P.D.' in red and 'AUSTRALIE V BRIND/A MD d.s on face, Nantes arrival d.s. (25 OCT 74) on reverse. The 1/- rate represents the rate in force February 1874 to May 1875 which includes the additional 'Galle Penny' retaliatory charge. Possibly the only example of this rate to France known

    1/- Crimson-lake used with 1871 Wmk Crown over NSW (I) 6d Mauve tied by Sydney 'N.S.W.' in concentric ovals duplexes to 1875 (31 Jul) envelope to London, endorsed 'Via San Francisco p "Cyphrene" '. Arrival d.s. (SP 27 75) on reverse. An attractive double rate franking
