Despite the endorsement, this cover was sent on the usual P&O service leaving Sydney on 24 June

Small portions of back flap missing, still an exceptional example from this famous correspondence

Small mss '1/1' at left, the rate representing the rare 1/1d U.K. rate due the imposition of the retaliatory 'Galle Penny' charge between February 1874 and May 1875. Ex J.S. With unframed 'P.D.' in red and 'AUSTRALIE V BRIND/A MD d.s on face, Nantes arrival d.s. (25 OCT 74) on reverse. The 1/- rate represents the rate in force February 1874 to May 1875 which includes the additional 'Galle Penny' retaliatory charge. Possibly the only example of this rate to France known
