    'The Philatelic Handbook' by Major E.B. Evans (1885), 396 pages, some foxing of pages and spine split in two places, bearing the handstamp of A.F. Basset Hull

     

    Lot 2
    Estimate: $200

    Europe: Group of four fascinating inwards covers to Melbourne from the early 1920s, with 1922 (9 Sep) and 1923 (15 Jan) from Berlin franked with 3m Vermilion pair and 50m Slate-black strip of 3 respectively, and 1923 (22 Jun) from Riga, Latvia with 20s, all three showing in addition a large triple-oval cachet 'RUSSIAN FAMINE/I.F.T.U./RELIEF COMMISSION' in violet, also 1922 (29 Apr) cover from Moscow with 7500r on 250r and 22500r endorsed 'I.F.T.U.' at top left. The addressee, Miss E. Moore, was involved in the Peace Movement in WWI. Some small faults, but scarce inwards mail to Australia at this period and fascinating social history (4)

    Pacific Islands Picture Postcard group comprising 'Church Services in/New Guinea' unused, 'The Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels of the Owen Stanley Track' unused (plain back), Australian Board of Missions pamphlet 'The Fuzzy-Wuzzies in Action' (minor faults), Japanese soldier beheading an Australian airman, an American 'Remember Pearl Harbour' used from the Pacific (creased) and 'A Japanese Land Mine is harmlessly exploded on Guadalcanal' unused, also four Japanese illustrated PPCs 'captured' in the Pacific (10 items)
