The adhesives represent an unsuccessful attempt to pay the 2½d UPU rate from France with British stamps, with 't' in triangle applied at Dunkirk, mss '2½(d)', and the stamps uncancelled until arrival in London where obliterated with multiple '2' handstamps. Slight overall soiling, still a most uncommon use

    Plate 13 [IM] with 1880-1 1d (2) and 1873-80 2½d Plate 6 tied by Glasgow '159' obliterators or duplexes on 1880 (26 May) envelope addressed to a member of the 10th Brigade of the Royal Artillery in Malta. Initially franked with the two 1d adhesives to meet the 2d Soldier's rate via Brindisi, the letter was overweight and not eligible for the concession. It was struck with the boxed 'CANNOT BE SENT/EXCEEDS ½ OZ.' in red and held over for the additional 3d postage prior to despatch. The envelope with some peripheral faults and missing back flap, nevertheless a rare and important ½d use. Ex Gerald Sattin
