1811 (17 Nov) entire from Sydney to Stirling, North Britain, endorsed 'Per Gambier', without New South Wales markings. Rated '1/1' on arrival, crossed through and changed to '2/2' (due to enclosure), and with 'JU 8 812' arrival backstamp. The letter enclosing a payment is signed by Maurice Charles O'Connell, commanding the 73rd Regiment which had arrived in Sydney in 1809 with Governor Macquarie, who appointed him Lieutenant-Governor. He married former Governor Bligh's daughter, and left the Colony in 1814 for Ceylon. He returned in 1838 as a Major-General in command of military forces in New South Wales, a position he held until 1847. A fine and early letter from New South Wales |
