    SPECIMEN STAMPS OF THE AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, VICTORIA, U.P.U. RECEIVING AUTHORITY HANDSTAMPS

    Lot 452
    Estimate: $2,000 Realised Price : $1,600

    1885-99 Wmk V over Crown (V1), (V2) or (V3) Perf 12½ range comprising 1885 Naish Stamp Duty 3d, 8d and 2/- Blue-Green, 1886-96 ½d Pink, 1d Naish Yellow-Green, 1d Reading Orange-Brown, 2½d Red-Brown on Yellow, 4d, 5d, 6d, 9d apple-Green, 9d Carmine-Rose, 1/- 1/6d Orange, 1899 1d Reading Rose-Red, 1½d Apple-Green all with Bechuanaland receiving ‘SPECIMEN’ (21½ x 2¾mm). Some small defects but a unique group (18)

    The Bechuanaland receiving handstamp was applied to all stamps received without any form of defacement

     

    Lot 453
    Estimate: $750 Realised Price : $600

    1885-86 Wmk V over Crown (V1) or (V2) Perf 12½ range comprising 1885 Naish Stamp Duty ½d, 3d, 4d, 6d 8d and 2/- Olive on Green, and 1886 2d Pale Lilac all with Natal receiving ‘SPECIMEN’ (17 x 3mm) in violet. Generally fine and a unique group. [Ex Sotheby Parke Bernet South Africa sale of 9/10/1980, Lot 13] (7)

    The Natal receiving handstamp was applied to all stamps received without any form of defacement

    Estimate: $1,500 Realised Price : $1,350

    1906 Wmk V over Crown (V4) Perf 12x12½ ‘POSTAGE’ ½d to £2 punctured ‘OS’ and cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. in 1906 for U.P.U. distribution and with Natal receiving ‘SPECIMEN’ (17 x 3mm) in violet (except ½d, c.t.o. only). Generally fine without gum. Three 2002 Ceremuga Certificates for ½d - 5/-, £1 and £2 (15)

    Estimate: $500 Realised Price : $500

    1900 Charity 1d (1/-) Olive-Brown and 12d (2/-) Emerald-Green affixed to pieces of ledger page and with Portuguese Colonies receiving ‘ULTRAMAR’ handstamp in blue. Slight toning, otherwise fine (2)

    Between 1895 and 1910 U.P.U. specimen stamps sent to Lisbon for distribution to Portuguese Colonies were further handstamped ‘ULTRAMAR’ prior to despatch

    1901 Wmk V over Crown (V4) Perf 12½ No ‘POSTAGE’ 6d Emerald, 1/- Yellow and 2/- Blue on Pink cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. and with Portuguese Colonies receiving ‘ULTRAMAR’ handstamp in blue. Fine (3)

     

    Lot 457
    Estimate: $200 Realised Price : $160

    1901 1d Olive Reading Stamp Duty cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. and with Portuguese Colonies receiving ‘ULTRAMAR’ handstamp in blue, and 1912 1d on 2d ‘POSTAGE’ also c.t.o. and with ‘COLONIAS’ handstamp in violet, affixed together on piece of ledger page. Slight toning, otherwise fine (3)

    The ‘COLONIAS’ handstamp was in use between 1910 and 1925

     

    Lot 458

    1901 ‘POSTAGE’ 1½d Maroon on Yellow, 2½d Dull Blue, 4d Bistre-Yellow and £1 Carmine-Rose cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. and with Portuguese Colonies receiving ‘ULTRAMAR’ handstamp in blue. Fine, except £1 affixed to piece of ledger page with some toning (4)

    1906 Wmk V over Crown (V4) Perf 12x12½ ‘POSTAGE’ ½d to £2 punctured ‘OS’ and cancelled-to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. in 1906 and with Portuguese Colonies receiving ‘ULTRAMAR’ handstamp in blue, affixed to three pieces of ledger page. Generally fine with slight toning(15)

       

    Lot 460
    Estimate: $400 Realised Price : $700

    1901 Wmk V over Crown (V4) Perf 12½ ‘POSTAGE’ £1 Carmine-Rose cancelled -to-order with ‘MELBOURNE’ c.d.s. for FE 26 02 and with additional ‘MUESTRA’ handstamp vertically in blue. Fine large part o.g., and the only recorded example

    The ‘MUESTRA’ handstamp is believed to have been used for U.P.U. stamps sent to Spanish Colonies, but was applied only to the top denominations of series, hence it is rarely seen
