1915 (5 Sep) postcard to Sydney with '2 AUST LH BDE FIELD PO' skeleton cds, and boxed censor handstamp in pink. The writer was Corporal Francis Patrick Curran of the 7th Light Horse Regiment. Curran distinguished himself in the Gallipoli campaign, displaying great bravery, and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. After the evacuation of Gallipoli the Light Horse were to remain in Egypt. However, Curran thought this would be a sideline to the main war, and decided to stow away on a transport to France. He was discovered at disembarkation at Marseilles, arrested as a deserter and returned to Egypt. His Regiment had meanwhile gone into action to defend the oases at Romami, and hearing this, Curran managed to elude his guard and proceed to the front line. On arrival he assisted the stretcher bearers, and ventured into no man's land many times to retrieve wounded. On his 15th sortie, he was shot and killed. He is buried at Kantara Cemetery. The postcard represents a poignant reminder of one of the heroes of Gallipoli  | ||
