    AUSTRALIAN COLONIES, NEW SOUTH WALES, POSTAL HISTORY 1824-1850

    Lot 230
    Estimate: $600 Realised Price : $1,250

    1824 (26 June) entire from Sydney to London with step-type 'DEAL/SHIP LETTER' and London arrival backstamp (5 JA 1825). Rated 1/- for a triple-weight ship letter with 4/- due on delivery. Sent per 'Midas' which came out with convicts and returned as a sealer via Macquarie Island and Cape Horn. A scarce early letter from the period when Sydney used no handstamps.

    1828 (6 May) entire to Aberdeen, Scotland with 'SYDNEY/N.S.W.' circular datestamp, endorsed 'with a box of plants', reverse with step-type 'KINGSBRIDGE/SHIP LETTER' plus London and Edinburgh arrival datestamps. Rated '4d’ ship letter, '1/7' and '2/6' and with the boxed '½' Scottish turnpike tax. A good example of Sydney's first dated marking

    1838 (9 Feb) entire from Sydney to London with first type oval 'POST PAID SHIP LT./SYDNEY' in red (recut state with 8-petal floral design in date line), reverse with framed 'INDIA LETTER/PLYMOUTH' in red and London arrival datestamp (2 JY 1838) in red. Rated '3'(d) ship letter with 2/2d due from the addressee. Fine and clean

    1838 (14 May) entire to 'Juggyong' (Jugiong) with framed 'SYDNEY/POST PAID' in red and oval 'GENERAL POST OFFICE/SYDNEY' datestamp, and without any mark of receipt. Rated '11`'(d) in red. Light horizontal and vertical filing folds otherwise of fine appearance

    1838 (8 Aug) outer (no side flaps) from Sydney to Berrima endorsed 'Immediate', readdressed to Wollomollo, with crowned oval 'GENERAL POST OFFICE/SYDNEY' datestamp on reverse, and circular 'BERRIMA/N.S.W.' datestamp on face, rated '8'(d), fine and clean

    1839 (5 Jun) outer to London with framed 'WINDSOR/POST PAID' in red and straight-line 'WINDSOR/N.S.W. on reverse, oval 'PAID SHIP LETTER/SYNDEY' datestamp in red and London arrival backstamp (8 NO 1839). rated '10' in red (7d inland plus 3d ship letter), with 1/- due from addressee

    1840 (6 Jan) outer to Queensferry, Scotland, with framed 'GOULBURN/POST PAID' in red, oval PAID SHIP LETTER/SYDNEY datestamp, reverse with Goulburn despatch datestamp and step-type 'SHIP LETTER/PLYMOUTH', and with London and Edinburgh arrival datestamps. Rated '4/4' (crossed through) and '2/8'. Somewhat heavy vertical filing fold, otherwise fine

Very fine

    1843 (15 Apr) entire to Mauritius with oval 'PAID SHIP LETTER/SYDNEY' datestamp in red, endorsed 'pr Blackdog' and rated '3' for a ship letter. Reverse with 'JOUBERT & MURPHY' sender's cachet and with double circle 'MAURITIUS/POST OFFICE datestamp (date illegible). Very fine and possibly the earliest recorded cover from New South Wales to Mauritius

    1844 (12 Aug) entire to London and redirected, with framed 'PAID AT/ARMIDALE' in red and with oval 'PAID SHIP LETTER/SYDNEY' datestamp in red, despatch and Bagshot arrival datestamps on reverse, range of rate markings. Some light soiling and light vertical filing fold

    1845 (6 Mar) incoming entire from Liverpool U.K. to Sydney, endorsed 'Via Marseilles' and rated '2/2', unusually with boxed 'BOMBAY/SHIP LETTER/Bearing' transit datestamp on reverse, together with 'SHIP LETTER/SYDNEY' arrival datestamp. Fine, and a scarce via Marseilles incoming letter

    1850 (19 Dec) entire from Sydney to Albury with crowned 'PAID' datestamp in red and handstruck '2' representing 2d inland rate. On reverse is a weak Albury oval datestamp 22 DE 18 with year date missing, and apparently supplemented by a manuscript post office endorsement 'Albury 24 Decr 50' on the face signed by postmaster. Superb quality and an interesting entire
