    1856 (15 Jun) cover Melbourne to England bearing 2 x 6d imperforate Woodblocks with four margins each, cut close at top on one unit and both tied by B/N '1', mss. 'per "Australasian"' and backstamped Newark. An attractive double rate cover

    1857 (14 Sep) outer Melbourne to London franked four margined 6d Woodblock endorsed 'p Emeu' and carried on the ill-fated voyage which stranded on a coral reef in the Red Sea. The Southampton mails were transferred onto the P&O 'Ripon'. A clean and attractive cover with about twenty examples from this incident believed to exist

    1859 (21 Mar) folded registered wrapper Hepburn to Ballarat via Creswicks Creek (all backstamped) bearing imperforate 1/- Octagonal and 4d perforated Emblems representing the single inland registered rate. Soiled but a scarce franking

    1860 (24 Dec) outer from Geelong to London franked perforated 1/- Octagonal, 6d Queen on Throne and 3d Beaded Oval (showing numerous flaws at left and unpriced on cover). Two examples of this three issue mixed franking recorded. Scarce

    1861 (8 Jan) front and large part back folded cover to Melbourne, the reverse with rare Ballan mss. despatch marking franked perforated 1/- Octagonal and pair 4d Beaded Oval. Scarce double inland plus registration rate

    1861 (May) trimmed front of an entire franked perforated 1/- indigo Octagonal to Adelaide (scarce destination and double rate) bearing two strikes of the Adelaide GPO cds (one tying the stamp). A rare shade particularly on cover and more so cancelled on arrival. RPSL Certificate (2004)

    1861 (24 May) cover Bunninyong to France with transit markings of Melbourne, London and Calais on reverse and face and franked with tied pair 6d Queen on Throne. A few stains but an uncommon example of mail to France via Southampton

    1861 (25 Jul) entire Melbourne to Birmingham franked pair and single perforated 1/- Octagonal plus 3d Beaded Oval representing the quintuple via Marseilles rate and the only example believed to exist. A famous cover offered in the Marken and Ganzachenhaus auction in 1921 (Lot 4218). Ex Davis (2002) and Palmer (2010)

    1861 (20 Dec) outer (few file folds) Melbourne to Dunedin 'per Aldinga' franked 2 x 6d Beaded Ovals. Four double rate covers to New Zealand recorded. Fine and unusual

    1862 (17 May) envelope Belfast to Dublin franked by tied 6d and 3d Beaded Ovals for the 9d single via Marseilles rate. A neat and clean cover

    1863 (26 Aug) cover Sandridge to New York with UK accountancy and transit markings on face, franked perforated 1/- Octagonal and 6d Adapted Design (closed tear) and routed 'via Marseilles'. A few minor filing faults but a very early example of the revised Marseilles rate of which five examples are recorded by Palmer

    1864 (18 Apr) and 1876 (14 Nov) covers Geelong to New Zealand franked 6d Adapted design and pair and single 2d Bell, representing the single and triple rates respectively. A few blemishes but an uncommon destination

    1865 (25 Jul) cover Melbourne to Belfast, Prince Edward Island bearing strip of three of 6d Adapted design tied by Melbourne duplex, mss. '5' and '1, London Paid transit and Prince Edward Island arrival cds on rear. The sole example recorded by Palmer. Ex Lehr (1992)

    1865 (4 Oct) entire newspaper 'The Argus' to Edinburgh, bearing 1d Laureate (wing margin) tied by Melbourne cds. Ironed out crease, a few faint stains and peripheral faults but a very scarce example of non-letter rate mail particularly in its entirety

    1867 (25 Oct) cover front from Castlemaine (with rare 'Registered/Castlemaine' cds) to Switzerland bearing 3 x 1/- and 10d Laureates representing the double postage and foreign registration rate plus 6d domestic registration. A few peripheral faults. Ex Harvey, Jaffe, Palmer

    1868 (5 Feb) cover Melbourne to Aden (ADEN. STR. POINT) bearing tied pair 6d Laureate. Cover typically aged and discoloured from this correspondence but a very rare destination

    1869 (4 Dec) cover Beechworth to France bearing outstanding franking of pair 1/-, 6d and 4d Laureates. Rear flap damage but the sole example of a quadruple rate via Marseilles rate recorded by Palmer. Ex Kekko

    1871 (25 Jan) small envelope Melbourne to Swansea, Tasmania franked with a tied 3d Laureate. An uncommon rate. Fine. Ex Blake

    1872 (29 Oct) unfranked small envelope Kilmore to St Petersburg, Russia inscribed via Trieste and overscored. Unpaid and consequently sent via Marseilles and struck with the GB 'diamond' accountancy mark. Charged a total of '72' kopecks on arrival. The sole example of mail to Russia in the pre-UPU period. Ex Davis
