1843 (17 Apr) entire headed 'Australind 17 April 1843' addressed to Hebdon Bridge, Yorkshire and endorsed (inside) 'p Phantom to Mauritius' (the Phantom left Port Leschenault [later Bunbury] on 20 April directly for Mauritius). Struck with the chamfered boxed 'SHIP LETTER/Crown/WESTERN AUSTRALIA/PAID' of Bunbury with mss date 'April 20 1843' inserted. From Mauritius the letter was directed to India (Calcutta backstamp in red, 26 JUL 1843), and with Liverpool arrival backstamp of 26 NO 43. Rated '4(d)' in red as a paid ship letter, with '8(d)' due from addressee. Some staining, but the earlier of only two recorded examples of the Bunbury ship letter handstamp (the other in red dated 1848). Ex Dr Cecil Walkley, and a major W.A. pre-stamp rarity

1903 (2 Dec) picture postcards (2) addressed to London and posted on board ship bound for Australia, each franked with GB 1d KEVII tied by Fremantle 'PO' duplex and with handstruck 'PAQUEBOT', one very worn type approx 45mm long between lines, the other a fine strike 56 x 8mm without lines, former with small tear repaired by sellotape. An interesting pair showing the use of two different types of 'PAQUEBOT' mark at Fremantle on the same day on mail presumably off the same boat (2)
