1911 Stamp Design Competition: 2d stamp-size photographic essay (48mm x 40mm) featuring Australian Coat-of-arms on map of Australia, signed 'J.E. Wilby' and endorsed on reverse 'Design entered by J.E. Wilby Vic State Printing Office'. Ex Arthur Gray and 'Goldfarm'. As a photographic essay only, unlisted by BW
1911 Stamp Design Competition: Large size bromide 165mm x 107mm) featuring a kangaroo on the map of Australia, with stamp-size reproduction at lower left, signed 'G.R. Unthank' and numbered '94' (the competition entry number). Although this design has a considerable resemblance to the issued kangaroo stamps, there is no evidence that it played any part in the design process. The original has apparently not survived, and thus unlisted in BW
1911 Stamp Design Competition: 1d pen-and-ink essay on card (69mm x 55mm) featuring the Australian Coat-of-arms by 'BE UNITED', the pseudonym of Maximilan Tannenberg. He submitted four different pen-and-ink essays, of which this is numbered 'III'. With stamp-size photographic reproduction as stipulated by the competition rules. Small mark at left side of no consequence, and unquestionably one of the most attractive of the 1911 competition entries. BW E67, cat AU$5000
1911 Stamp Design Competition: Perkins, Bacon & Co. artist's stamp-size composite essay, partly handpainted featuring a seated female figure, mounted on card (92mm x 85mm). These were returned with the explanation that no uniform issue could be made at that time. However, the firm subsequently re-submitted essays for the 1911 Stamp Design Competition under the pseudonym 'Sidero', including the design offered here. A beautiful essay, BW E81, cat AU$6000
