    AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH, POSTAGE DUES, MONOCOLOURED ISSUES

    Lot 569
    Estimate: $1,750

    1902-04 U.P.U. Specimen stamps provided by Queensland (in mint condition) and handstamped 'ULTRAMAR' in violet for distribution to Portuguese Colonies, comprising 1902 Blank Base ½d, 1d, 2d, 4d, 6d and 5/-, and 1902-094 Base Completed 5d, 10d, 1/- and 2/-, affixed to archival piece. Tone spot on 5/- and slight tracing of toning around perfs on others, of fine appearance and rare. BW lists only the 1902 ½d and 2d, and 1902-04 10d (at AU$325 each), so potential cat value is AU$3250 (10)

    Estimate: $5,500 Realised Price : $4,200

    U.P.U. Specimen Stamps: Four archival pages from the Queensland distribution to the U.P.U. mounted by the Tunisian Post Office, with both Queensland and Commonwealth Postage Due stamps (which were supplied in mint condition), most with a SPECIMEN receiving handstamp in violet (12.75 x 2.5mm). The Postage Dues comprise 1902 Blank Base ½d, 1d, 2d, 4d, 6d (2 each) and 5/-, and 1902-04 Completed Base 5d, 10d, 1/- and 2/- (2 each). Also there is a mint set of the same stamps. The Queensland stamps comprise 1895-96 ½d, 1d, 1897-1907½d - 2/, 1899 ½d and 1903 9d (two sets optd SPECIMEN and one mint set), also 1909 4d Green-black CTO (2). In addition the pages include the Western Australian distribution of Postage Dues cancelled by concentric circles obliterator, comprising 1902 Blank Base and 6d (2 sets), and 1902-04 Completed Base ½d, 1d, 2d, 5d, 1/- (2 sets). The 1899 New Zealand ½d and 1d are also (probably erroneously) included. Couple of stamps damaged, and pages themselves with some damage, otherwise fine and very fresh, a remarkable and unique document (92 stamps)

    1902 Blank Base mint and used range on hagner with ½d M (5) and U (15 incl fine block of 4), 1d M (4) and U (12 incl block of 4), 2d M (4) and U, 3d M (3) and U (2), 4d M (3) and U (4), 8d U (2), 5/- U. Range of shades (few stamps are faded), few have faults but generally good to fine (56)

    1902 Blank Base ½d, 1d, 2d, 3d, 4d, 6d and 8d overprinted SPECIMEN (18¼ x 2½mm) vertically reading up (½d, 1d, 4d, 8d) or down (2d, 3d, 6d) as used by Tasmania for distribution to the U.P.U. very fine with large part OG, exceptional quality for this set. BW cat AU$725 (7)

Specimen stamps supplied by Western Australia, cancelled-to-order with concentric circles obliterator, comprising 1902 Blank Base 3d and 6d, and 1902-04 Base Completed 1d, 4d, 5d (2) and 1/- (2). Fine, one 5d large part OG, others no gum. BW D7w, D9w, D17w, D26w, D29w, D37w, cat AU$800 (8)

    1902 Blank Base ½d, 1d, 2d, 4d and 5/- handstamped seriffed SPECIMEN (22 x 3mm), being the mint stamps as supplied by Queensland for distribution to the U.P.U., the SPECIMEN being applied as a receiving handstamp to the stamps supplied to Bechuanaland. All with toned gum and some mild facial foxing, however a unique group unlisted by BW (5)

Also 1906-08 Wmk Crown over A ½d, 1d and 2d. Range of shades and perfs, few with faults, and some possibly faded, however many fine stamps with large part OG are present, high catalogue value (33)

    1902-04 Base Completed ½d to 20/- overprinted SPECIMEN as used by New South Wales for distribution to U.P.U., part OG and very fine colour, 2d with one missing perf, good quality for this set. The stamps have been hinged with stamp selvedge by a receiving postal administration. SG cat £1000, BW cat AU$2085 (14)

    1902-04 Base Completed ½d to 20/- set overprinted SPECIMEN as used by New South Wales for distribution to U.P.U. with additional 'ULTRAMAR' handstamp in blue applied on Lisbon to stamps distributed to Portuguese Colonies. No gum and colour a little washed out as always seen for this set, which is rarely offered in this complete form. BW cat AU$4725
