1944 (31 Oct) Bank of British West Africa Ltd cover registered from Bathurst to Sydney bearing remarkable franking of 1938 10/-, 5/- pair, 4/-, 2/-. 1/- and 2/6d pair, aggregate of 32/- representing the 3/6d combined airmail rate per half ounce x 9 + 3d registration + 3d 'AR' fee (introduced May 15, 1943). Bathurst octagonal censor handstamp (code 'NN/3'), backstamped Registered G.P.O. Gambia, Registered Sydney and Manly. A copy of published article on this cover by Rd Perry accompanies. Extraordinarily high rate, and origin/destination by airmail. (The likely route out of British West Africa was via PanAm service introduced October 1, 1944 which would have seen article travel overland to Bolama, Nigeria, to connect with airmail service Bolama-Fisherman's Lake-Natal/Belem-Tinidad/San Juan/Bermuda/New York, thence North Atlantic service to Lisbon) |
