1d Red Die II used on cover to London with misplaced machine cancellation and subsequently cancelled with 'SHIP ROOM/SYDNEY' cds dated 3 JAN 13. Reverse endorsed 'Issued 2nd Jan 1913' and with Fred Hagen seal. This cover was clearly intended as a first day cover but a malfunction of the machine canceller led to the stamp being uncancelled on 2 January and was cancelled prior to despatch on the following day. See the note in the BW catalogue under the 1d Die I that all first day covers seen are Die I, this cover, however, is definitely Die 2.
